About The Position

This position is part of Emory’s Internal Travel Team (float), and it involves both clinical instruction for pre-licensure nursing students and primary direct care nursing (bedside care delivery). The Emergency Department Clinical Instructor is a highly skilled clinician who has demonstrated sustained professional contribution beyond direct patient care. This role is approximately 75% clinical instruction for pre-licensure nursing students and 25% direct patient care. Recognized as a clinical expert and role model, the EHI Clinical Instructor provides clinical instruction, supervision, and evaluation of pre-licensure nursing students in clinical, lab, and simulation settings, applies the nursing process and evidence-based practice to meet the complex care needs of specific patient populations, and serves as a resource for colleagues, students, physicians, nurses, patients, and families. This nurse actively engages in quality, knowledge, or leadership activities that strengthen clinical education and patient care practice and team capability.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
  • 2.5 years of recent and relevant nursing experience in the specialty area.
  • A valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
  • Certifications required based on clinical assignment/specialty area (BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, FHM).
  • Must obtain and maintain a specialty certification from the department's current Approved Certification List within twelve (12) months of hire or placement into the role. Approved certifications are established by the department and may vary based on specialty. Certifications not included on the approved list will not satisfy this requirement unless reviewed and approved by department leadership. Failure to obtain and maintain an approved certification within the required timeframe may result in further action in accordance with department and organizational guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates advanced assessment skills and anticipates the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes.
  • Plans and implements individualized patient care drawing on clinical experience; modifies the plan of care based on patient and family input and goals.
  • Applies the nursing process and evidence-based practices to meet the complex care needs of specific patient populations.
  • Anticipates patient and family learning needs and collaborates with the patient and family to identify appropriate resources.
  • Frequently acts as a resource to other nurses and colleagues regarding patient care needs and clinical decision-making.
  • Documents the nursing process accurately in the appropriate format and contributes suggestions for improving documentation processes.
  • Manages time effectively and assists colleagues with time management.
  • Ensures compliance and adherence with stated policies and procedures for a patient population, and remains informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrates competency in new equipment and procedures.
  • Works effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team, including patient and family advisors, and serves as a resource to other team members, students, physicians, and nurses.
  • Develops or contributes to the revision of policies, procedures, or workflows for a patient population, incorporating current evidence-based practice.
  • Functions in a leadership role and serves as Charge Nurse when assigned during direct patient care.
  • Precepts staff or students, including serving as a designated preceptor.
  • Explores opportunities to improve resource utilization and support cost containment.
  • Promotes cohesive team behavior among peers and provides assistance and guidance as needed.
  • Delegates effectively and supports other team members in the appropriate delegation of care.
  • Actively contributes to unit-based shared governance or practice council initiatives, identifying discipline-specific practice issues and helping develop or implement solutions.

  • Independently resolves routine and non-routine patient care and practice issues within own scope of practice, recognizing when a situation requires escalation to leadership or additional resources.

  • Provides instruction, supervision, and evaluation of pre-licensure nursing students in clinical, lab, and simulation settings.
  • Delivers educational experiences in collaboration with nursing faculty and leadership based on approved course syllabi, objectives, outlines, and assignments.
  • Coordinates with clinicians at clinical sites to deliver and evaluate clinical education experiences.
  • Meets regularly with students to provide academic feedback and facilitates post-conferences following clinical experiences.
  • Maintains student records.
  • Applies principles of adult learning theory to plan and conduct educational sessions that promote professional development, student competence, and positive patient and family outcomes.
  • Facilitates knowledge development in pre-licensure nursing students, including effective delegation and clinical skills.
  • Ensures students have the opportunities needed to acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviors required to fulfill clinical requirements.
  • Works with unit preceptors to individualize educational experiences for students.
  • Assists in developing clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills in students.
  • Attends scheduled faculty and staff meetings related to clinical education.
