About The Position

Emergency Communications Technicians fill a dynamic role within a highly specialized remote communications and intelligence hub, serving as the primary point of coordination for incident processing, resource mobilization, communications, and documentation during emergency and non-emergency calls. This role covers the front country and backcountry areas of over 25,000 sq km land base of the Kananaskis Region. The position is a casual role located in the Kananaskis Emergency Services office. Duties include simultaneous monitoring of multiple phone lines and radio channels, as well as operating a variety of communications equipment such as a multi-screen computer terminal, various software, printer, mapping software, advanced telephone system, GPS unit, iPad, and voice recorder. The Emergency Communications Technician acts as the primary resource for communications between numerous response agencies including the Kananaskis Country Mountain Rescue Team, Conservation Officers, Helicopter Rescue units, RCMP, EMS agencies, Provincial Flight Coordination Centers, Search and Rescue groups, Fire Departments, and various non-emergency agencies. They are responsible for managing multiple responses and incidents simultaneously, triaging priority calls based on available resources and immediate threats to life safety. Reporting to the Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor, this position also manages key emergency communications centre files and programs, including dispatch and radio communications program (training, licensing, and trends analysis), communications technologies and asset management, and stakeholder support.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Two years of related dispatch experience.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR- Level C/AED Certificate.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, or equivalent.
  • Standard 3-year Driver’s Abstract prior to commencement.
  • Criminal Record Check prior to commencement.
  • Able to work irregular hours, overtime, shifts, evenings and/or weekends, and/or statutory and provincial holidays.
  • Able to work independently without direct supervision, with initiative to remain productive and support other park programs when needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Dispatch experience with Emergency Services including International Academics of Emergency Dispatchers (IAED) Certification or similar.
  • Previous experience in Emergency Services including EMS, Fire and Public Safety.
  • Industry Canada- Restricted Radio Operators License-Aeronautical Certification.
  • Enhanced RCMP security clearance for use of enforcement applications.
  • Technical abilities in radio communications systems and equipment.
  • High level of computer proficiency including typing speed and abilities with Microsoft Office products.
  • Basic Emergency Management certificate.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) training.
