About The Position

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Communications Technician in our Communications Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to: Installing, optimizing, certifying, and repairing public safety telecommunications equipment. Supporting infrastructure/physical plant systems.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of electronics, digital and analog circuitry.
  • Knowledge of land mobile radio systems.
  • Knowledge of microwave systems.
  • Knowledge of multiplex systems.
  • Knowledge of electronic emergency power distribution equipment.
  • Knowledge of uninterruptible power sources and battery back-up systems.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical distribution wiring and electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of installation and repair of structured telecommunications wiring (local area network, telephone, and fiber optic).
  • Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of test instruments, including power, modulation, signal-to-noise and AC/DC meters, frequency counters, spectrum and digital analyzers, bit error rate testers and other specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to use a computer to interface with equipment.
  • Ability to complete paperless timekeeping and travel documentation.
  • Ability to maintain installation and service records and other software and microprocessor applications.
  • Ability to transport, set, and secure bulky electronic equipment racks and enclosures.
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout the state requiring overnight stays.
  • Ability to respond to calls for emergency service 24/7.
  • Must live within a 90-mile radius of the State Police Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield County within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and good driving record.
  • Continued employment contingent upon obtaining a FCC General Radiotelephone Operators License or recognized equivalent within six months of employment.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal military or civilian trade school electronics training preferred.
