The Emergency Communications Specialist is a public safety professional who serves as a link between citizens and first responders. The position involves working in a demanding, fast-paced environment, remaining composed under pressure, and supporting public safety and the community with accurate, timely communications. The role includes answering emergency and non-emergency calls, assessing reported situations, creating or updating calls for service in a computer-aided dispatch system, monitoring radio traffic and public safety communications systems, tracking unit activity, and responding to requests from field units. The employee must be available to work all shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work hours and days off may change, sometimes on short notice. Overtime may be required, and scheduled on-call availability includes the ability to report within two hours of being called in. The position requires consistent attendance, ongoing continuing education, and exceptional customer service. Hiring steps include application review, a skills assessment (a five-minute typing test with a minimum of 40 words per minute, business writing, and office grammar and spelling), a four-hour communications-center observation, an interview, and a conditional offer subject to background check, polygraph, and drug screening. The anticipated start date is early December 2026. The role is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay.
