About The Position

Wellstar is seeking an Emergency Communications Specialist to join their team. This role involves responding to calls in the Emergency Communications Center (ECC), assisting with the communication and coordination of emergency patient referrals and transportation. The specialist will facilitate communications within the Emergency Department, communicate via radio with helicopters, transport teams, and ambulances, receive patient information, complete documentation, and direct calls. A key responsibility includes dispatching AU Health AirCare critical care transport teams, providing in-flight communications, and tracking flight-following locations.

Requirements

High School Diploma General or GED General
EMT-BASIC - EMT-BASIC or EMT-INT - EMT-Intermediate or EMT-ADV - EMT-Advanced or NREMT - NREMT or PARA - Paramedic
BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
Less than 1 year direct patient care in a hospital or EMS field or as an EMS Dispatcher
Familiar with professional jargon used by EMS professionals, and aircraft pilots
Experience operating two-way radio equipment

Responsibilities

Respond to calls into the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) from referring physicians, AUMC physicians, pre-hospital (EMS) providers, and other medical personnel efficiently and in a customer-oriented manner.
Assist in the communication and coordination of emergency patient referrals and transportation.
Facilitate communications within the Emergency Department and with consulting physicians.
Communicate via radio with helicopters, transport teams, and ambulances, receiving patient information, completing documentation, and directing calls appropriately.
Dispatch AU Health AirCare critical care transport teams, providing in-flight communications and plotting flight-following locations.
With the aid of a computerized database, respond to calls from various AUMC constituents and personnel requesting information.
Make appropriate decisions based upon the problem presenting.
Triage emergency calls and dispatch according to written policies and procedures of the AUMC ECC.
Ensure the safety of AirCare flight crews by being responsible for AirCare dispatching, flight following, and tracking.
Collect accurate and complete data that is legibly recorded on Call Record Forms.
Enter data accurately and timely into the computer database.
Dispatch all calls efficiently and professionally.
Maintain a database for all users of the ECC by gathering, updating, and maintaining control of information specific to each referring hospital and physician, AUMC physicians, services, and programs available at AUMC.
Collect and relay pertinent patient demographic information and patient condition to transport crews and receiving services at AUMC.
Track, monitor, and record calls by maintaining call logs and documentation of patient information with accuracy to management.
Work with Admissions to ensure patient information is entered into all systems timely and the patient's medical record number can be obtained for reference in the ECC database.
Act as a liaison between referring physicians, AUMC physicians, Emergency transportation and aeromedical service providers, and AUMC specialty transport teams to ensure timely, efficient, friendly, and accurate communication between all parties.
Successfully use the patching capability of radio equipment to connect pre-hospital EMS and AEMS providers with ED physicians and nurses.
Maintain familiarity with the dispatch protocols and radio communications of various EMS and law enforcement providers to allow effective two-way radio communications to request helicopter services.
Use professional language and appropriate professional jargon for communicating by two-way radio with ground ambulances, air ambulance crews and pilots, and internal ED radio communications equipment.
Adhere to FCC Guidelines and laws for operating radio transmitters.
Perform other duties as assigned.
