Embedded Software Engineer - Broadband CPE

T-Mobile•Overland Park, WA
•$92,500 - $166,800

About The Position

T-Mobile is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to develop software for broadband customer premises equipment (CPE), including gateways and mesh extenders used with T-Mobile Home Internet. The role is part of a small development team within a larger program and contributes to device software from the start. The engineer develops device agents in C and C++ on the RDK-B platform, using Broadband Forum open USP standards and a microservice architecture. The agents manage, monitor, and troubleshoot devices, and interface with Wi-Fi and cellular subsystems through RDK and RBUS. The role involves maintaining containerized services delivered through a Kubernetes-based packaging and deployment pipeline, debugging across the device software stack, and supporting maintenance releases and OEM defect investigations. This position does not involve writing Wi-Fi drivers or modem firmware. The role also includes unit testing, automated test coverage, firmware validation, field data and log collection improvements, technical documentation, and contributions to development and delivery processes. The engineer collaborates with technical teams and OEM partners, and may perform other duties or projects as assigned. Travel is required.

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Analytical thinking, collaboration, continuous development, DevOps, emerging technologies, programming languages, software design, software development, technology development, and test evaluation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with RDK-B and RBUS, or a comparable embedded networking platform and message bus.
  • C and C++ development on embedded Linux.
  • Strong Wi-Fi knowledge, including 802.11 standards and generations, band and channel behavior, client association and steering, and practical troubleshooting.
  • Strong grounding in the IP stack and network technologies, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, NAT, routing, and bridging.
  • Working understanding of 5G networks and fixed wireless access.
  • Familiarity with TR-069, TR-369 (USP), or TR-181 device management standards.
  • Experience writing unit tests and building or extending automated test coverage.
  • Experience with containerized applications and delivering packages to embedded devices.
  • Proficiency with Git and continuous integration pipelines.
  • Hands-on development experience with cellular, Wi-Fi, mesh networking, or other carrier-side telecom products.
  • Proficiency in C and C++.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals and comfort debugging software not written by the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain one or more microservices within the device management agent using C and C++ on RDK-B.
  • Implement and maintain device data model parameters and USP protocol behavior across supported hardware platforms.
  • Interface with device Wi-Fi and cellular subsystems through RDK and RBUS to configure them, query state, and report it upstream.
  • Build and maintain containerized device services delivered through a Kubernetes-based packaging and deployment pipeline.
  • Write unit tests for new and changed code and extend automated test coverage.
  • Debug across the device software stack, including log analysis, root cause investigation, and fix verification.
  • Support device maintenance releases, including test support, firmware validation, and release verification.
  • Work with OEM partners on defect triage and reproduction.
  • Improve collection of field data and logs to accelerate issue triage and resolution.
  • Contribute ideas to improve how device software is built, tested, and delivered.
  • Document code, the data model, and device behavior.
  • Develop embedded software components and device management services for broadband CPE to support engineering projects and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with technical teams, learn new technologies, and support debugging, testing, release verification, and defect investigation.
  • Create clear documentation for software code, system designs, business requirements, device data models, and software behavior.
  • Support technology strategy and business goals, including improvements to device software testing, diagnostics, and development processes.
  • Present ideas to improve systems, processes, or services based on industry research.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by business management.
