Embedded Software Engineer, Microcontrollers

Base Power Company•Austin, TX

About The Position

Base is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer for its Embedded MCU team. The role owns microcontroller firmware that controls Base’s batteries, inverters, and disconnect systems, including bare-metal and RTOS software spanning control logic, state machines, fault handling, drivers, BSP/HAL, and peripheral configuration. The firmware must operate reliably and safely in the field. The engineer will lead new-board bring-up, develop reusable firmware libraries, and partner with hardware and power electronics engineers at the hardware/software boundary. The work includes deterministic real-time control and protection within strict timing budgets, device communications over CAN, and firmware deployed across Base’s growing fleet. The position takes products from prototype through production and field deployment, using hardware-in-the-loop testing and crash dumps to reduce firmware issues. Base is a startup where priorities and responsibilities may evolve with business needs. The company states that it works in person and is not a 9-to-5 environment.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience shipping bare-metal and/or RTOS firmware on modern microcontrollers, such as ARM Cortex-M, including taking one or more products to manufacturing.
  • Deep expertise in C/C++, including clean, modular, defensive code and a solid understanding of memory management, ISR-safe patterns, and compiler and runtime behavior.
  • Ability to read schematics and datasheets and work directly with hardware and power electronics engineers on design and processor-selection tradeoffs.
  • Strong firmware architecture skills, including separation of responsibilities, minimal shared state, built-in observability, and designs that roll out safely and fail predictably.
  • First-principles problem-solving, a track record of finding simple solutions to difficult embedded problems, and root-cause debugging skills extending to hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing deterministic real-time control and protection on multi-core MCUs, including robust fault handling and safe recovery.
  • Experience with CAN/CAN-FD and higher-level protocols such as ISO-TP and UDS, including firmware updates over CAN.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, grid-tied inverters, or battery management.

Responsibilities

  • Own microcontroller business logic, including state machines, control and sequencing logic, fault handling, and safety coordination for batteries, inverters, and disconnect systems.
  • Lead new hardware bring-up, from peripheral configuration and driver development through BSP/HAL integration.
  • Implement and tune deterministic real-time control and protection on multi-core MCUs, partitioning work across cores and meeting ISR timing and jitter budgets.
  • Build and maintain device communications, including CAN/CAN-FD drivers, buffering, transport reliability, higher-level protocols, and firmware-update flows.
  • Serve as the primary software interface to Hardware Engineering by participating in schematic reviews, advising on processor and peripheral selection, pin assignments, and timing, and debugging HW/SW integration issues on the bench.
  • Build reusable firmware libraries and coding standards to replace product-specific implementations and accelerate product delivery.
  • Take products from prototype through production firmware and field deployment, using hardware-in-the-loop testing and crash dumps to reduce field-reported firmware issues.
