Embedded Networking Engineer

Apple•San Diego, CA

About The Position

Apple is seeking a software engineer for its Core Networking team to lead and contribute to the architecture and development of next-generation networking technologies. The team develops and improves operating-system networking components across Apple products, including iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS devices. The engineer will design and develop systems firmware that enables TCP/IP networking on a co-processor, providing connectivity efficiently in terms of power and thermal use. The role includes mentoring junior team members and leading cross-functional design. The position requires strong networking and systems-architecture knowledge, low-level firmware skills, effective communication and leadership, and the ability to take ownership and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment with little overhead.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of real-time embedded software (firmware) development experience, including design and implementation.
  • Proficiency in C or C++ on resource-constrained embedded platforms.
  • A BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent networking software development experience.
  • Experience with embedded operating systems or microkernels, such as Embedded Linux, QNX, VxWorks, or L4.
  • Experience with networking stack implementations, such as BSD, Linux/Android, Solaris, lwIP, sevenstax, or mbedTLS.
  • Familiarity with link-layer technologies such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular.
  • Excellent conceptual understanding and working knowledge of TCP/IP and related networking technologies.
  • Strong system-level architectural thinking and low-level firmware programming skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to operate gracefully under stress, work independently with little overhead, show initiative, and take ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the architecture and development of next-generation networking technologies.
  • Design and develop systems firmware that enables TCP/IP networking on a co-processor with power- and thermal-efficient connectivity.
  • Mentor junior members of the team.
  • Lead cross-functional design.
  • Take ownership of a problem area and understand the team's technology in the broader product and network context.
  • Balance multiple assignments and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
