About The Position

The Elevator Repair Apprentice is a five-year voluntary apprenticeship program designed to train individuals to become state-licensed Certified Elevator Technicians. This program is approved by the Federal Bureau of Apprentice and Training and combines on-the-job learning with formal course instruction. Apprentices must be available for on-call duties, accessible by phone, and able to report to work within one hour of being called. The role requires working shifts and overtime as scheduled, sometimes with little or no advance notice. Adherence to all safety rules and regulations is paramount, including those found on product and equipment labels and as directed by management. Upon completion of work, the apprentice is responsible for leaving the worksite clean and orderly, ensuring all tools and equipment are cleaned, and materials are secured. Work must be performed in accordance with applicable guides and manuals. Apprentices will log completed work in various logs, including equipment guides, logbooks, PM repair logs, on-the-job training logs, classwork logs, and timesheets. Administrative tasks include time and attendance tracking, work order processing, ordering and receiving parts, and communicating with vendors, manufacturers, and other relevant parties. Apprentices must follow all UA and UA Elevator Shop policies and procedures and complete all required classroom training and testing, which may involve up to 9 hours per week of mandatory related instructional classes after work hours. Note that apprentices will not be paid for time spent in program classes or study.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED
One (1) year of elevator experience; OR high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of electrical or electronic experience.
Valid U.S. driver's license.
At least 19 years of age at time of hire.
Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report in compliance with University policies.
Ability to pass a post-offer drug screen.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation.
Working knowledge of the use of multimeters and oscilloscopes.

Nice To Haves

Degree or certification in electrical maintenance.
Experience troubleshooting and making repairs on AC/DC motors and motor control circuits.
Experience troubleshooting and making repairs on relay and/or solid state/microprocessor control circuits.
Experience troubleshooting and making repairs on hydraulic systems and valves.
Experience troubleshooting and making repairs on mechanical systems in general.
Sufficient relevant work experience or equivalent industry training may qualify for the Advanced Curriculum (AET Designation) level upon approval by the NAEC Education Committee.

Responsibilities

Observe and adhere to all safety rules and regulations.

Attend and complete all classroom training and testing required under the apprenticeship program.
Be on call, be accessible by phone when on call, and report to work within one hour of being called.
