About The Position
The Elementary School Counselor provides a functional guidance program under the direction of the principal. This role focuses on assisting students in self-awareness, decision-making, and problem-solving. The counselor is also responsible for student appraisal, providing information, facilitating realistic student placement, offering referral services, and contributing to program evaluation and research. Additionally, the counselor participates in school programs, provides consultative assistance, engages in curricular planning, and pursues professional development.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree
- Valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate
- Certification as an Elementary School Guidance Counselor
Nice To Haves
- Three years successful teaching experience is preferred
Responsibilities
- Provides counseling services to assist students in understanding and accepting themselves, developing decision-making competencies, and resolving problems.
- Assists in student appraisal procedures by organizing, developing, collecting, studying, and interpreting appraisal data for student development.
- Assists in providing informational procedures by organizing, collecting, disseminating, and interpreting educational and occupational information.
- Develops suitable plans and procedures for effective group guidance activities and plans with teachers for guidance-related instruction.
- Assists in realistic student placement by participating in grouping procedures, helping students make informed subject choices, and identifying relevant activities.
- Assists in providing referral services by utilizing special services and community agencies, ensuring data accuracy, and making parents aware of referral services.
- Assists in providing evaluation and research data by developing plans for continuous evaluation of the counselor's work and the total guidance program.
- Cooperates with local, state, federal, and university-sponsored guidance research studies.
- Participates in student orientation programs and articulation.
- Provides and receives consultative assistance concerning student growth and development.
- Participates in curricular planning and revision with a student-centered focus.
- Develops plans for continuing on-the-job professional improvement.
- Implements and interprets the testing program.
- Plans and assists the superintendent and/or principal as directed.
- Maintains regular attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
