About The Position

The Elementary School Assistant Principal supports and advises the principal in administering the instructional programs and overall operations of the school. Serving as a member of the school leadership team, the assistant principal provides instructional guidance, supervises and evaluates staff, maintains the school facility, and fosters a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment. The assistant principal develops and implements instructional programs, supports professional growth for staff, engages families and the community, and serves as the acting principal in the principal’s absence to ensure continuity of leadership and smooth school operations. The position promotes continuous improvement and student achievement, positively impacting students, staff, families, and the wider school community. This is an entry-level position in the school-based administrative series. The Elementary School Assistant Principal serves as a key member of the school leadership team and is responsible for supporting the principal in administering and supervising the total elementary school program. Responsibilities may vary depending on the school’s organizational structure, student population, and assigned programs. Incumbents are expected to perform duties of increasing complexity and responsibility as they gain experience, including providing instructional leadership, supervising, and evaluating staff, maintaining school operations, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment, and serving as a liaison between the school and the community. The position also includes serving as acting principal in the principal’s absence.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of modern public elementary school education principles, practices, and trends, with the ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
  • Knowledge of curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment methods, and school improvement planning.
  • Knowledge of school administrative practices, student services, and operational management.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate instructional programs, school operations, and personnel effectively.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to motivate and guide staff while fostering a collaborative and positive school culture.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with students, families, staff, school officials, and the community.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, making sound decisions, resolving conflicts, and applying professional judgment in complex or sensitive situations.
  • Ability to model professionalism, ethical behavior, cultural competence, and nondiscriminatory practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey expectations, feedback, and information to diverse audiences.
  • Master’s degree in education, school administration or educational leadership.
  • A minimum of (four) 4 years of experience in teaching, preferably at the high school level.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational leadership, supervision, or administrative capacity.
  • Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Must have or be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia.
  • Administrative and supervision PreK-12 endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration and supervision of the total elementary school program, including academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provide instructional leadership to staff to ensure high-quality teaching and learning aligned with APS goals and state standards.
  • Supervise and evaluate instructional and support personnel and support professional development programs to enhance staff performance and instructional effectiveness.
  • Uphold effective student discipline and foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate.
  • Monitor student attendance, grading, counseling, and pupil services programs.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating school improvement plans and instructional programs.
  • Assist in coordinating school operations, including transportation, safety, facility management, and support services.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and assist with budget and fiscal procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with emergency procedures, drills, and safety protocols.
  • Engage families and community partners to support student success and maintain positive communication.
  • Serve as liaison between the school and external community organizations.
  • Participate in staff selection, induction, and retention processes; make recommendations regarding hiring or termination.
  • Assist in training, observing, and evaluating faculty and staff.
  • Plan, supervise, and participate in school events, workshops, and orientations.
  • Serve as administrator in the principal’s absence.
  • Perform additional administrative, instructional, or operational duties as assigned to support school leadership and student success.
