About The Position

The Assistant Principal, High School is responsible for administering and supervising the total high school program by providing instructional leadership, supporting staff and student development, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment. The Assistant Principal supports the principal in developing and implementing a sound instructional program, supervises and evaluates staff performance, maintains the school facility, and serves as a liaison between the school and the community. The impact of this work is reflected in the overall quality and effectiveness of the school’s academic and operational programs. The Assistant Principal directly contributes to the success of the school by promoting continuous improvement, maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, fostering positive relationships among students, staff, families, and the community, and advancing Arlington Public Schools’ (APS) mission of preparing every student to learn, grow, and succeed. The Assistant Principal, High School is a professional, school-based administrative position and serves as an entry-level role in the school-based administrative series. The Assistant Principal is assigned to an APS high school and may be one of multiple assistant principals at the school, with specific responsibilities varying by school. The nature of the work involves applying professional knowledge and administrative skills to a wide range of instructional, operational, and management tasks. Incumbents exercise judgment in planning and implementing programs, supervising staff, and addressing school-based issues, considering factors such as school goals, student needs, and resource availability. As incumbents gain experience, they are expected to assume responsibilities of increasing complexity and independence, developing solutions and approaches that may require original thought and adaptation to the unique circumstances of their school.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of modern public high school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment methods, and current trends in secondary education.
  • Thorough knowledge of school administrative practices, procedures, and operational management, including student services and school improvement planning.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate instructional programs, operational activities, and personnel effectively.
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, and develop staff while fostering a high-performing and collaborative work environment.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and the community.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, making sound decisions, resolving conflicts, and adapting solutions to unique school circumstances.
  • Ability to model professionalism, ethical behavior, cultural competence, and high standards of conduct in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and support staff, students, and the broader school community to achieve academic and operational goals.
  • Master’s degree in education, school administration or educational leadership.
  • A minimum of (four) 4 years of experience in teaching, preferably at the high school level.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational leadership, supervision, or administrative capacity.
  • Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Must have or be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia.
  • Administrative and supervision PreK-12 endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration and supervision of the total high school program, including academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provide instructional leadership to staff to ensure high-quality teaching and learning aligned with APS goals and state standards.
  • Supervise and evaluate instructional and support personnel and support professional development programs to enhance staff performance and instructional effectiveness.
  • Uphold effective student discipline and foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate.
  • Monitor student attendance, grading, and behavior procedures.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating school improvement plans, instructional programs, and specific curriculum areas.
  • Assist in coordinating school operations, including transportation, safety, facility management, and operational support services.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and assist with budget and fiscal procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with emergency procedures and drills.
  • Engage families and community partners to support student success, maintain effective communication, and foster collaboration.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and community organizations.
  • Participate in staff selection, induction, and retention processes; make recommendations regarding hiring or termination.
  • Assist in training, observing, and evaluating faculty and staff.
  • Plan, supervise, and participate in school events such as graduations, assemblies, pep rallies, workshops, and orientations.
  • Serve as administrator in the principal’s absence.
  • Supervise security and custodial staff to promote school safety.
  • Attend professional meetings, workshops, and conferences for professional development.
  • Adapt functions and responsibilities based on school organizational structure, student population, and assigned programs.
  • Perform additional administrative, instructional, or operational duties as assigned to support school leadership, student success, and effective school operations.
