About The Position

The Poughkeepsie City School District (PCSD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Elementary Assistant Principal for the 26-27 school year. This role involves planning, organizing, and implementing instructional programs to meet student learning needs and guide their development. PCSD Assistant Principals are expected to possess strong knowledge of school operations, excellent communication skills for interacting with parents and diverse populations, and the ability to evaluate staff, contribute to master schedules, discipline students fairly, direct instructional programs, and collaborate with teachers and support staff. The primary responsibility is to establish elementary schools as active learning centers focused on student engagement, teacher support, effective instructional practices, and measurable academic progress. Candidates should demonstrate a strong belief in all children's capacity to learn, instructional leadership that improves student outcomes, experience in school turnaround and change management, effective work with urban schools and diverse populations, a deep understanding of teaching and learning, accountability for student progress, data-driven decision-making, and consensus-building skills.

Requirements

  • Master's degree
  • New York State School District Administrator (SDA), or School Building Leader (SBL) certificate by the time of appointment.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in K-12 education
  • 3 years at the supervisory/administrative level at the elementary level
  • 3 years of experience as a state education department certified educator

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Principal in the development, implementation, improvement, and evaluation of the instructional program ensuring conformance to state standards, the District's code of conduct, and Board of Education goals and policies.
  • Works collaboratively with all staff to strengthen the instructional program.
  • Confers with teachers, students, and parents concerning educational and behavioral problems in school.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of students and staff.
  • Plans and supervises fire drills and an emergency preparedness program.
  • Walks about the school building and property to monitor safety and security.
  • Establishes effective communication and maintains positive relationships with district administrative offices, students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Works with the Principal in compiling annual budget requests.
  • Assists in the preparation of the master schedules, staff assignments, student scheduling, cumulative records, and attendance reports.
  • Assists in the communication, implementation, and observance of all Board policies and regulations by staff and students.
  • Assists the Principal in teacher evaluations.
  • Responsible for special duty assignments as directed by the Principal.
  • Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and attend school-sponsored activities, and functions, when possible.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Assists in the recruiting, screening, interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating of the building staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building principal.
