About The Position

We are looking for an Electronic Systems Engineer – Software to join the Engineering team in Columbus, Indiana. This role focuses on embedded microcontroller software development and systems engineering, including software design, verification, requirements management, simulation, and validation. The engineer analyzes system, subsystem, and component behavior to inform product architecture and design decisions, identify risks and failure modes, and improve product reliability. The role also contributes to scalable product platforms and ensures software updates meet product requirements and are reliable and maintainable. The engineer develops and verifies software using sound engineering practices; investigates software issues and recommends corrective actions; and applies systems knowledge to decisions involving requirements, architecture, design, and testing. The role includes creating and managing validation plans, assessing risk, interpreting analytical and physical test results, and recommending solutions to ensure requirements are met. It also requires translating stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, managing requirement changes and traceability, analyzing system interactions, applying statistical methods, documenting findings, and collaborating across functions. The position calls for independent execution of established development processes, improvement of tools and workflows, and management of ambiguity in moderately complex systems. Core technical work includes programming in C, embedded microcontroller software development, and reading and interpreting MATLAB Simulink models and generated code. The role also involves using coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field. This is an entry-level/early-career position; relevant student or early-career technical experience and knowledge of MS Office are preferred. Licensing may be required for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent college/university education.
  • Entry-level or early-career professional profile.
  • Software programming skills in C.
  • Ability to read and interpret MATLAB Simulink models and code generated from those models.
  • Ability to investigate software issues, understand causal mechanisms, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ability to use coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and HIL environments.
  • Systems knowledge to make sound decisions in requirements, architecture, design, and testing.
  • Ability to execute established development processes independently and manage ambiguity in moderately complex systems.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience as an intern, co-op, or through other extracurricular team activities, or early-career professional experience in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.
  • CAN, CAN-FD, and J1939 message interpretation and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software for microcontrollers.
  • Build and verify software using engineering principles and ensure software updates are reliable, maintainable, and aligned with product requirements.
  • Investigate software issues, understand causal mechanisms, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Use coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and HIL environments to deliver verified software builds.
  • Model and analyze system, subsystem, and component behavior to predict performance and guide architecture and product decisions.
  • Identify critical interfaces, functions, interactions, risks, and failure modes to improve product reliability.
  • Develop product platforms, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and maintain traceable plans aligned with future product and market needs.
  • Create and manage validation plans, assess risk, interpret analytical and physical test results, and recommend solutions to ensure requirement compliance.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, manage lifecycle changes, and maintain traceability and linkages among teams and designs.
  • Analyze interactions across systems to predict behavior, refine designs, and drive modifications that deliver intended product effects.
  • Collaborate across functions and with product and software teams; coordinate input and guide technicians or student contributors.
  • Apply statistical methods, solve problems rigorously, communicate technical information, and document findings to support organizational knowledge.
  • Execute established development processes independently and improve tools and workflows.
