About The Position

Cummins is seeking an Electronic Systems Engineer – Software to join its Engineering team in Columbus, Indiana. This early-career role focuses on embedded microcontroller software development and systems engineering. The engineer will help improve product reliability, shape design through simulation and analysis, develop scalable product platforms, deliver and verify high-quality software, and lead verification and validation activities. The role also involves defining and managing system requirements, applying systems thinking to improve designs, and collaborating across functions to communicate technical findings and document organizational knowledge. The position requires software programming in C and the ability to read and interpret MATLAB Simulink models and generated code. The engineer will use coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments to investigate software issues and deliver verified software builds. The role also involves embedded software and system-level decision-making across requirements, architecture, design, and testing, including work with product and software teams and guidance for technicians or student contributors. A bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required. A relevant postgraduate degree may be required for select roles. Preferred candidates have relevant experience through temporary student employment, such as an internship or co-op, extracurricular team activities, or early-career work in a relevant technical discipline. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred. The position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent, is required.
  • Software programming skills in C.
  • Ability to read and interpret MATLAB Simulink models and code generated from those models.
  • Ability to investigate software issues, understand causal mechanisms, recommend corrective actions, and use coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and HIL environments.
  • Ability to make systems-level decisions concerning requirements, architecture, design, and testing.
  • Ability to execute established development processes independently, improve tools and workflows, and manage ambiguity in moderately complex systems.
  • Entry-level or early-career professional profile.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience from temporary student employment, such as an internship or co-op, extracurricular team activities, or early-career work in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.
  • CAN, CAN-FD, and J1939 message interpretation and analysis.
  • A relevant master's degree may be required for select roles.

Responsibilities

  • Identify critical interfaces, functions, interactions, and risks to mitigate failure modes and improve product reliability.
  • Model and analyze system, subsystem, and component behavior to predict performance and inform product architecture and design decisions.
  • Develop product platforms, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and maintain traceable plans aligned with future product and market needs.
  • Build and verify software using sound engineering principles to ensure reliable, maintainable updates that meet product requirements.
  • Create and manage validation plans, assess risk, interpret analytical and physical test results, and recommend solutions to ensure requirements are met.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable system requirements, manage requirement lifecycle changes, and maintain traceability across teams and designs.
  • Analyze interactions across systems, predict behavior, refine designs, and drive modifications that achieve intended product effects.
  • Collaborate across functions, communicate technical information, apply statistical methods, solve problems rigorously, and document findings.
  • Investigate software issues, determine causal mechanisms, recommend corrective actions, and use coding, compiling, static analysis, integration tools, and HIL environments to deliver verified software builds.
  • Apply systems knowledge to decisions about requirements, architecture, design, and testing that affect software performance, product quality, and cross-business-unit integration.
  • Gather input and coordinate with product and software teams; guide technicians or student contributors and contribute to shared goals.
  • Execute established development processes independently, improve tools and workflows, manage ambiguity in moderately complex systems, and build proficiency while influencing team outcomes.
  • Develop embedded microcontroller software and interpret and analyze CAN, CAN-FD, and J1939 messages.
