About The Position

Cummins is seeking an Electronic Systems Controls Technical Specialist for its Controls Performance and Features team within the Air Handling Applied Controls Software and Electronics Engineering organization in Columbus, Indiana. The position is hybrid and focuses on controls engineering for engine, powertrain, and power-system applications, including automotive and off-highway diesel and spark-ignition engines. The specialist develops, calibrates, and validates electronic controls and virtual-sensor algorithms; translates customer and system requirements into controls strategies and diagnostics; and supports the controls development lifecycle from specification, modeling, and simulation through calibration, testing, verification, and product maintenance. The role also involves collecting engine data, validating calibrations, documenting results, supporting certification, and troubleshooting issues in test cells, trucks, and field test units. The specialist works with cross-functional engineering teams, contributes technical guidance and reviews, maintains engineering practices and tuning guides, and improves calibration tools and processes. GT-POWER and MATLAB simulations and support for AUTOSAR software and calibration development are also part of the work.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Controls Engineering.
  • Experience with test cell, vehicle, and bench testing, as well as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing.
  • Knowledge of basic machine-learning models and data-analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of internal combustion engines and their operation.
  • Expertise in controls, mechatronics, and systems engineering, including interactions among hardware, software, sensors, actuators, and open- and closed-loop control strategies.
  • Ability to apply statistical analysis, modeling, simulation, verification, and testing to identify root causes, mitigate failure modes, and support engineering decisions.
  • Ability to translate stakeholder needs into clear, verifiable requirements, maintain technical documentation, and communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions, consider diverse perspectives, make timely decisions, and continue developing technical and professional capabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GT-POWER engine simulations.
