About The Position

Advanced Energy is seeking an Electronic Engineer to support the functions of its R&D laboratory, including rapid experiment execution, equipment installation and maintenance, and process automation. The hands-on role will contribute to new technology development in the Plasma Power group. It is suited to an early-career engineer interested in experimental work, troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems, writing scripts for data logging and automation, and developing robust solutions in a fast-paced environment. The position is based in Fort Collins, Colorado, in a standard office and laboratory environment. Infrequent domestic travel of approximately 5% may be required.

Requirements

  • Comfort with vacuum systems, including leak checking, pump types, gauges, and seals.
  • Comfort with RF power and matching basics, grounding, EMI/RFI, and shielding.
  • Comfort with gas handling, including MFCs, valves, regulators, purging, and pneumatics.
  • Comfort with tools including Python, JMP, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and TwinCAT.
  • Comfort with standard laboratory instrumentation, including oscilloscopes, VNAs, RF VI probes, multimeters, leak detectors, and thermal sensors.
  • Ability to read schematics, PIDs, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently as needed and collaboratively in a multinational, highly innovative team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics, plus 2+ years of hands-on experience with semiconductor or precision electromechanical systems; or an M.S. in one of those fields with 0 years of experience.
  • The experience section specifies 0–2 years of hands-on experience with semiconductor or precision electromechanical systems, including internships, laboratory work, or senior projects; a master’s degree with no experience is accepted.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of RF engineering and plasma physics principles.
  • Basic understanding of power electronics and power supply technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Build Python/JMP scripts or LabVIEW routines to automate equipment and capture, clean, and analyze logs.
  • Write clear experimental reports that translate data into hypotheses, evidence, and next steps.
  • Design and execute design of experiments (DOEs) to validate performance windows and sensitivities, sharing findings with Engineering and Controls teams.
  • Maintain the EtherCAT mainframe and laboratory infrastructure.
  • Use mechanical design experience with CAD software.
  • Own uptime and maintenance of R&D semiconductor etch and deposition tools and ancillary equipment.
  • Triage equipment outages and troubleshoot vacuum systems (UHV/HV), RF/DC generators and matching networks, gas panels/MFCs, and thermal control.
  • Perform preventive maintenance suited to research cadence and implement failure Pareto and recurrence controls while maintaining experimental agility.
  • Conduct MSA/Gage R&R studies when measurement fidelity affects conclusions.
  • Modify R&D semiconductor etch and deposition tools and ancillary equipment, and plan and mechanize non-standard configurations such as RF/DC generator and matching-network changes and custom fixtures.
  • Maintain the laboratory and its equipment in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety regulations.
  • Participate in regular safety team meetings, audits, and projects.
  • May assist in training other Advanced Energy employees on established processes.
