About The Position

The R&D Engineer II serves as an expert in liquid coating application and supports both solvent and waterborne technologies. The role collaborates closely with the formulating lab, Marketing, Sales, and end customers to advance technologies and meet product performance and warranty expectations. It involves hands-on development and testing, technical project leadership, data analysis, and application of specialized knowledge in coating equipment, chemistry, pretreatment, and substrates. The role may also involve mentoring lower-level engineers, chemists, and technicians.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial).
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in liquid coating application, technical service, or research and development.
• Experience with conventional air-spray, HVLP, pressure pots, and electrostatic hand-spray application.

Nice To Haves

• Advanced degree in Chemistry or Engineering.
• 12 or more years of experience in liquid coating application or technical service.
• Experience with liquid application methods such as airless/air-assisted airless, electrostatic air-assisted airless, rotary bell, or turbo disc.
• Experience with robotic application equipment.
• Experience with data visualization software for analyzing large datasets.
• Experience designing, executing, and analyzing experimental studies to characterize product performance.

Responsibilities

• Communicate effectively and promptly with managers, customers, vendors, and other stakeholders, including delivering formal and informal presentations as needed.
• Apply, cure, and test new coating products.
• Analyze data to identify trends, resolve customer issues, and assess information for project advancement.
• Lead technically complex projects or multiple simpler projects with minimal supervisor input.
• Establish project timelines and identify resource needs.
• Apply specialized knowledge of liquid application equipment, application theory, liquid coating chemistry, pretreatment, and substrates to support development of high-performance coatings and conduct root cause analysis.
• Maintain housekeeping standards and perform preventative maintenance for the liquid application lab.
• Implement continuous improvement efforts.
• Use the SDS and raw materials management system.
• Adhere to safety policies and laboratory documentation requirements.
• May work directly with and mentor lower-level engineers, chemists, and technicians to support project goals.
