About The Position

The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is dedicated to creating a safer Montana through Accountability, Rehabilitation, and Empowerment. If you want to use your technical skills to contribute to public safety and support the operations of a secure correctional facility, we invite you to join our team at Montana State Prison. We are seeking a dependable, skilled Electrician to maintain the critical electrical systems that keep our correctional facility safe, secure, and fully operational. In this role, your expertise directly supports the infrastructure relied upon by staff, inmates, and the community every day. Working in a correctional environment, you play a key part in ensuring safety, maintaining essential facility operations, and supporting a stable setting that enables rehabilitation and programming. Your leadership also provides inmates with valuable job skills that contribute to successful reentry.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Meet the licensed electrician requirements listed under 37-68-301, MCA
  • Completion of an approved inside wireman apprenticeship program in an electrical trade or completion of an appropriate training program conducted by a bona fide union or trade association.
  • Third party verification of (8,000) hours of legally obtained practical experience in installing, and repairing electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, and power in residential construction consisting of less than five living units in a single structure. [37-68-305, MCA]
  • Or Worked in the electrical maintenance field for at least (20,000) hours, accompanied by written certification by the applicant’s employer that the applicant has attained at least (20,000) hours in the electrical maintenance field while working for the employer. A minimum of (8,000) of these hours must be practical experience. [37-68-305, MCA]
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain facility wiring, lighting, and electrical control systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to plan and complete jobs accurately.
  • Diagnose electrical issues using testing equipment and perform repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure all electrical components—transformers, connections, equipment—meet safety and compliance standards.
  • Work independently to plan, lay out, and complete jobs across a large, complex facility.
  • Supervise and train inmate workers, ensuring proper work practices and safety procedures.
  • Provide leadership and guidance that supports inmate skill development.
  • Coordinate closely with the Maintenance Management Team for facility needs and project planning.
  • May supervise an apprentice electrician (1:1 supervision ratio).
