About The Position

The City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department is seeking a motivated, knowledgeable, and experienced Electrician. This position performs a variety of journey-level skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and installation of electrical equipment and systems. Installs meter and distribution panels and wires facilities according to blueprints. Establishes power load capacities and balance panels. Installs, maintains, and repairs industrial circuits, high voltage lines, power systems including transformers and generators. Locates, tests and troubleshoots underground electrical lines. Operates and works with an aerial bucket, aerial lift, boom-truck, trencher, forklift, and other related equipment. Examines various electrical systems and makes recommendations for new equipment, repairs and modifications.

Requirements

  • Four years of journey level experience.
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible electrical repair experience.
  • Completion of the twelfth grade and the completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship program or certification as a State of California Electrician.
  • Possession of a California Driver's license is required at time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical experience that includes high voltage / high current and industrial systems.
  • Knowledge and experience complying with Cal-OSHA safety standards and requirements.
  • Industrial circuits and systems.
  • Understanding of HVAC disconnects and power supply.
  • Computerized energy management software.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled activities in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits.
  • Read and understand technical drawings, plans and diagrams.
  • Operate various tools, instruments and equipment used in the testing and repair of electrical equipment.
  • Analyze electrical problems and develop and implement effective solutions.
  • Operate a computer and related software.
  • Participate in safe work practices.
  • Communicate effectively in providing training on the use of equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Standing, walking, crouching, bending, and climbing for extended periods of time; Operating assigned electronics equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment.
