The Electrician Apprentice joins a four-year Registered Apprenticeship Program, learning practical electrical trade skills through on-the-job training, classes, workshops, and coursework. Apprentices work under the guidance of a Journeyman-level electrician, gain experience within a specific department, and learn about other aspects of the industry. The program includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and at least 576 hours of related technical instruction and coursework. Apprentices receive progressively increasing wages based on a percentage of the current hourly journey-worker wage rate, rising from 55% to 90% across eight 1,000-hour training periods. Instruction and testing use NCCER electronic learning and testing. Topics include job-site and general workplace safety; installing and maintaining electrical systems; interpreting the National Electrical Code for solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems; blueprints and construction drawings; electrical construction quality control; and team building. Upon completing the program, apprentices are strongly encouraged to take the Commercial Electrician Journeyman licensure examination in their jurisdiction. This is a full-time hourly position with possible overtime. Work may take place outdoors and in varying temperatures, and apprentices may travel to assigned job sites. The role requires use of computers and tablets for electronic learning and printed materials for classroom education. Applicants must qualify through employment by Gridworks, Inc. or by an employer performing construction work on a Gridworks-contracted project that has executed an Employer Acceptance Agreement with Gridworks.
