About The Position

The Electrical Trades Assistant will maintain overall safe work practices and adhere to safety policies and procedures. This role ensures the quality of their own work and that correct construction procedures are followed in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications. The assistant must be able to receive and carry out verbal and written instructions, work as part of a team, and maintain housekeeping by keeping the worksite free of rubbish and materials/equipment stowed in an orderly manner. They are responsible for conserving waste of consumables and materials, and accountable for the completion of daily work assignments, including work completion and quality sign-offs. The role involves learning on-the-job as a trainee, assisting or working with other trades as directed, and monitoring the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations, reporting deficiencies to the supervisor. The assistant must comply with Austal USA’s “Equal Opportunity and Anti-Harassment Policy” and the Employee Handbook. Key tasks include pulling cable in and outside of vessels, learning the fundamentals of electrical concepts and practices, and obtaining working knowledge of marine electrical installation of penetrations, packing, cable trays, hangers, and cable types/installation methods. Additionally, the assistant will learn the fundamentals of aluminum welding concepts and practices and must obtain and maintain a B Class CV fillet weld certification.

Requirements

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide.
  • Ability to measure using the Metric and English system.
  • The ability to understand directions and follow instructions; both oral and written.
  • Ability to pass mechanical aptitude test.
  • Must obtain and maintain applicable certifications required to perform essential functions.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of competency and safe use of all trade related power tools.
  • Supply own Trade tools to be able to maintain productive output and perform Duties.

  • No felonies related to theft, drugs or violence.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • US person - permanent resident or citizen.
  • HS Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience; comparable trade experience is defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, 2 years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicable Trade Technical Diploma/Certificate or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous shipyard experience or experience in a similar industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout preferred.
  • Experience welding preferred.

  • Pulls cable in and outside of vessel overcoming obstacles.
  • Learns the fundamentals of electrical concepts and practices in order to perform assigned task to satisfy budget and schedule requirements.
  • Obtains Working Knowledge of Marine Electrical Installation of Penetrations and Packing.
  • Obtains Working Knowledge of Marine Electrical Installation of Cable Trays and Hangers.
  • Obtains Working Knowledge of Marine Electrical Cable Types and Installation methods.
  • Learns the fundamentals of aluminum welding concepts and practices in order to perform assigned task to satisfy budget and schedule requirements.
  • Obtains and maintains a B Class CV fillet weld certification in required positions.
