About The Position

The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated professional to administer provincial safety code authority duties. This role involves reviewing electrical plans and inspecting new systems or alterations in residential and commercial buildings. The successful candidate will work independently to interpret regulations, audit for compliance with the Safety Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code, and collaborate with community partners to resolve technical issues.

Requirements

  • Completion of the 12th school grade
  • Journeyman Electrician certification recognized in Alberta plus 5 years of relevant experience post-certification OR Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma plus 7 years of relevant building construction experience OR Electrical Engineering degree plus 5 years of relevant experience (with at least one year post-degree)
  • Certification as an Electrical Group A Safety Codes Officer with the Safety Codes Council in Alberta
  • Analyze and interpret complex legislation, including the Safety Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code
  • Identify construction that fails to meet code intent or presents hazardous conditions
  • Evaluate structural stability through plan reviews and on-site assessments
  • Review and interpret technical designs prepared by architects and engineers
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly and professionally to diverse community partners
  • Manage multiple priorities and organize tasks effectively under deadline pressure
  • Make impartial and transparent decisions when applying safety codes
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member or work independently with minimal supervision
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
  • Candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience specifically involving residential, Part 9, and Part 3 projects
  • Advanced proficiency in using POSSE or similar data management software

Responsibilities

  • Review permit applications and electrical plans for compliance with bylaws, codes, and municipal standards
  • Conduct site inspections during various construction stages to ensure alignment with approved plans and safety legislation
  • Issue, withhold, or revoke permits based on assessment findings and ensure all deficiencies are corrected
  • Provide technical interpretations of the Canadian Electrical Code to contractors, developers, and homeowners
  • Maintain accurate records and input relevant data into POSSE and other management systems
  • Identify safety code infractions and assess necessary repairs for structures to meet required standards
  • Collaborate with internal departments like Fire Rescue Services and Alberta Health Services for coordinated approvals
