About The Position

The Toro Company is seeking an Electrical Product Safety Engineer to join their team. This role is responsible for tracking safety and regulatory compliance for electric-powered products, advising product development teams, and ensuring products meet U.S. and International standards. The engineer will also support EU Risk Assessments, review manuals, develop compliance plans, and interface with regulatory agencies and third-party certification authorities. This position plays a key role in anticipating and resolving product compliance issues, representing the company in standards development organizations, and collaborating with the Legal Department on safety and regulatory matters. The role also involves supporting the Corporate Product Safety Policy and potentially supervising product safety testing, while adhering to the company's Quality Policy.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical, Mechatronics or applicable engineering degree required.
  • Typically seven (5+) years’ experience with evaluating safety standards, reviewing & ensuring product designs meet requirements for compliance, auditing, preferably within the electric products industry.
  • Typically seven (7+) years’ experience with evaluating safety standards, reviewing & ensuring product designs meet requirements for compliance, auditing, proactive product safety management or compliance in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the electric products industry.
  • Typically seven (10+) years’ experience with evaluating safety standards, reviewing & ensuring product designs meet requirements for compliance, standards development, auditing, proactive product safety management or compliance in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the electric products industry.
  • Qualified candidates need to be versed in regulatory compliance and standards promulgation activity regarding electric products.
  • Must be able to find and analyze electric product safety standards and assist teams with their understanding of the standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to interact with all levels of personnel internally and externally, as well as with various groups, business functions and governmental agencies.
  • Able to effectively convey proposed strategies and legal requirements to senior-level management.
  • Must be able to coordinate or supervise work of consultants, contract, or full-time employees.

Nice To Haves

  • International experience and experience in international standards writing capacity is a plus.
  • Understand worldwide battery regulations and standards.
  • Understanding of EMC for OPE.
  • Ideal background is in product safety and liability within manufacturing, particularly OPE or other electrical product.
  • Previous experience in applying electrical components and subsystems to mechanical equipment for monitoring and control.
  • Demonstrated capability to create and analyze portions of product design.

Responsibilities

  • Track safety and regulatory compliance status on electric powered products and ensure that TTC Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) teams meet their safety and regulatory compliance requirements prior to production and through the product shipment release process.
  • Advise OPE product development teams on electric product safety compliance.
  • Evaluate and interpret U.S. and International product safety and regulatory standards to ensure products meet all.
  • Provide safety and regulatory related design guidance for product development teams.
  • Evaluate updates to current standards and implement new requirements to existing and new products.
  • Support European Union Risk Assessments.
  • Review Operators’ manuals.
  • Assist in development of safety and regulatory decals.
  • Prepare product safety compliance plan for project teams.
  • Communicate and educate OPE engineering, product evaluation, and technical publications teams on standards changes.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies and third-party certification authorities.
  • Anticipate and prevent potential product compliance issues.
  • Assist in resolving product compliance issues as they arise.
  • Represent the company by being an active member on Domestic and International standards development organizations and committees for electric powered products. (i.e. ANSI, IEC, UL).
  • Serve as an electric product engineering liaison to the Legal Department and work collaboratively with Legal on safety and regulatory compliance topics as needed.
  • Support compliance to the Corporate Product Safety Policy and related guidelines.
  • May supervise product safety testing, including: preparation of test sample(s), execution of the test(s), test reporting and data analysis.
  • Support the company Quality Policy by working within the documented Quality system. Responsible for the operation of the quality system within their respective area. Participate in quality initiatives and training as needed.
  • Participate in applicable specialization group activities.
