Electrical Engineering Manager

Pentair•Apex, NC

About The Position

Pentair is seeking an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead the electrical engineering discipline for its connected-product portfolio in the Pool business. The role is based with the Apex, North Carolina team and partners closely with IoT Engineering to deliver connected pool products with strong reliability, performance, and user experience. The manager leads a team of 4–6 Electrical Engineers and serves as a hands-on technical leader, setting direction while participating in architecture and design reviews. The position oversees end-to-end electrical design of mixed-signal PCBAs, power electronics, motor drives, sensor interfaces, safety-critical circuits, and integrated wireless hardware. It also establishes design standards and guides technical decisions across cost, performance, reliability, EMC, safety, and manufacturability. The manager collaborates with firmware, mechanical, systems, industrial design, product management, manufacturing, quality, reliability, and regulatory partners throughout product development. The role manages electrical resources and deliverables across concurrent new-product programs, supports Pentair's stage-gate NPD process, and owns electrical design reviews, DVT planning, regulatory test readiness, and transfer to manufacturing. It promotes compliance, reliability practices, failure analysis, and continuous improvement in electrical design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressive industry experience in electrical/electronic hardware development for microcontroller-based, connected consumer or light-industrial products.
  • 3–5 years of direct people-management experience leading electrical engineering teams through the full product development lifecycle.
  • Deep expertise in mixed-signal PCBA design, including schematic capture, PCB layout supervision, component selection, and design-for-manufacturability.
  • Demonstrated experience with power electronics, motor drives (including VFDs), and line-voltage AC / low-voltage DC design in a regulated product environment.
  • Working knowledge of RF/wireless design and integration across Wi-Fi, BLE, Thread/Matter, and Sub-GHz.
  • Strong understanding of embedded system hardware/firmware interfaces, including I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN.
  • Proven experience partnering with firmware teams on hardware bring-up and integration.
  • Applied experience with safety, EMC, and regulatory compliance standards relevant to consumer or industrial electrical products, including UL, CSA, FCC, and NEC.
  • Track record applying stage-gate NPD processes, design reviews, FMEA, and structured design verification in hardware development.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to operate as a technical peer to Mechanical, Systems, Firmware, and Product Management leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience collaborating with distributed teams across sites and time zones.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of 4–6 Electrical Engineers designing hardware for connected pool equipment.
  • Set technical direction and remain hands-on in electrical architecture and design-review discussions.
  • Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and succession planning for the electrical engineering team.
  • Promote engineering excellence, design ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Direct end-to-end electrical design of mixed-signal PCBAs, microcontroller-based control boards, power electronics, motor drives, sensor interfaces, and safety-critical circuits.
  • Oversee integrated RF and wireless design for Wi-Fi, BLE, Thread/Matter, and Sub-GHz technologies.
  • Establish and maintain electrical design standards, schematic and layout practices, component-selection guidelines, and design-review discipline.
  • Guide architecture trade-offs involving cost, performance, reliability, EMC, safety, and manufacturability.
  • Partner with IoT Engineering and embedded firmware teams on hardware architecture, peripheral selection, communication interfaces, system behavior, hardware bring-up, and integration.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering, Systems Architects, Industrial Design, and Product Management to translate requirements into electrical architectures.
  • Engage Sustaining, VAVE, Manufacturing, SQA, and Reliability partners to support design-for-manufacture, design-for-cost, and design-for-reliability.
  • Coordinate with Regulatory Compliance and external certification bodies, including UL, CSA, and FCC.
  • Manage electrical workload, resource allocation, and deliverables across concurrent NPD programs.
  • Drive electrical execution through Pentair's stage-gate NPD process and contribute to specification quality at program start.
  • Own electrical design reviews, DVT planning, EMC and regulatory test readiness, and design transfer to manufacturing.
  • Track and report team KPIs, including on-time deliverables, first-pass design success, and post-launch electrical quality.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable safety and regulatory standards, including UL 1081, UL 1563, UL 676, NEC 680, and FCC Part 15.
  • Champion electrical FMEA, worst-case analysis, derating, and reliability practices.
  • Support failure analysis and RMA root-cause investigations and incorporate lessons into design standards and NPD programs.
  • Promote first-time-right electrical design through peer review, structured design verification, and documented design intent.
