Electrical Engineer

Emcore Corporation•Tinley Park, IL
•$82,500 - $125,000•Onsite

About The Position

EMCORE is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and sustain the electronics behind our fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) and inertial navigation products. Working closely with an experienced senior electrical engineer as a technical lead, this engineer will contribute to next-generation product designs while keeping proven production hardware performing at its best. The position offers hands-on experience with precision optoelectronic and mixed-signal systems, with increasing design ownership as experience grows. This 100% in-office role is based at the FOG facility in Tinley Park, IL. Occasional travel (<10%) to Customers, suppliers, or other EMCORE facilities may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, including embedded microcontroller-based systems, power circuits, and analog-to-digital conversion.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Altium or equivalent.
  • Experience with component obsolescence resolution, engineering change processes, or sustaining engineering in a production environment.
  • Hands-on proficiency with lab equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills with the ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to both give and receive constructive feedback in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship (U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident).

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Familiarity with fiber optics and optoelectronic circuits such as photodetector amplifiers and light source drivers.
  • Experience with DSP- or FPGA-based designs.
  • Ability to read and modify Python scripts for test automation and data analysis.
  • Exposure to aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability products and standards (e.g., AS9100, IPC-A-610).
  • Experience with SiliconExpert or similar component lifecycle tools.
  • Knowledge of MIL-HDBK-217 reliability analysis, FMEA, and worst-case analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, debug, and test analog and digital circuitry for fiber optic gyroscopes and inertial measurement systems, including embedded microcontroller and DSP-based circuits, power subsystems, and analog-to-digital conversion.
  • Troubleshoot production and field failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions on board- and system-level hardware.
  • Resolve component obsolescence on production hardware: identify at-risk parts, evaluate form-fit-function replacements, and implement design changes through verification and release.
  • Update schematics, PCB layouts, and BOMs in Altium, and process engineering changes through release.
  • Perform circuit analysis and simulation to verify that replacement parts and design changes meet performance and reliability requirements.
  • Create and maintain design documentation, specifications, test plans, and test reports.
  • Execute design, test, and analysis tasks assigned by the lead engineer, taking on greater ownership with experience.
  • Provide technical support to production, test, quality, and supply chain teams.
  • Stay current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements.

Benefits

  • The salary range for this position is $82,500 to $125,000 annually, depending on the candidate's experience, skill set, and overall qualifications.
