Electrical Engineer IV - Cultural & Civic

Progressive CompaniesDurham, NC

About The Position

In this role, you will lead electrical design on the firm's most complex projects. You will serve as the engineer of record on assigned major projects, producing PE-stamped designs and specifications that meet the client's goals, adhere to Performance Based Design principles, and comply with code. This includes the least precedented work the firm takes on, from renewable energy integration and smart grid design to advanced control systems. You will act as the firm's technical authority on electrical code and standards, being the person the discipline defers to on NEC, IEC, and international standards, and representing the firm in discussions with building officials and government agencies. You will track where the codes are heading, bring that back into how the discipline designs, and contribute to code development where the opportunity arises. You will own the quality review of complex electrical documentation, reviewing critical drawings, calculations, and specifications for accuracy and compliance before they leave the office, with no unresolved deviations reaching the client. You will provide feedback that improves the design, not just feedback that clears the checklist. You will set the discipline's documentation standards in Revit and AutoCAD, establishing and maintaining the standards and procedures the electrical team draws to, ensuring a consistent look and feel regardless of the office or project team. You will be the client's primary technical contact on assigned projects, working with clients through the full project lifecycle, understanding the real objectives behind the stated scope, and translating design strategy into terms understandable to clients, facilities directors, and contractors. You will deliver the reports and presentations that carry those decisions and make the hard technical calls that protect the schedule and the firm. You will lead cross-disciplinary teams through complex scope, coordination, and sequencing problems. You will work with Project Managers and Team Leaders on project plans for large-scale initiatives, and surface risk early enough to allow for correction. You will lead field inspections on major projects to ensure built work matches design intent. You will build the depth of the electrical team, mentoring engineers and designers across the company, leading Lessons Learned sessions, and serving as a technical resource to senior and executive staff on major decisions for current and future work. The goal is to build a team capable of taking on harder projects each year due to your mentorship. You will also bring in new work through your professional network, staying visible in the industry, professional organizations, and with past clients, and turning those relationships into opportunities for the firm.
