Electrical Engineer II - Hardware Design (ONSITE)

RTX•Melbourne, FL
•$68,900 - $131,100•Onsite

About The Position

RTX’s Collins Aerospace Communication, Navigation & Surveillance team is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design and maintain computer hardware components for avionics systems. This is an onsite position in Melbourne, Florida, and requires a U.S. Person because the role involves access to export-controlled information or hardware. No security clearance is required. The engineer will work with analog, RF, and digital circuits and computer hardware, support PCB layout, perform hands-on troubleshooting and product verification, and contribute to engineering estimates and continuous improvement. The role also includes monitoring obsolete parts and resolving obsolescence issues, reviewing line-replaceable-unit (LRU) defect trends, identifying root causes, and recommending improvements to development processes. The position offers opportunities to deepen knowledge of electrical hardware simulation, analysis, and design across digital, mixed-signal, power, and RF domains, as well as learn Collins development engineering practices and aircraft and avionics certification processes.

Requirements

  • A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field.
  • Must be a U.S. Person; the role requires access to ITAR or 600/500-series EAR information or hardware, and the company will not seek export authorization for this role.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing and analyzing analog and RF circuits using schematic capture tools and performance simulation tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with RTCA/DO-160, DO-254, and FCC/ETSI regulations and standards for Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including temperature, RF emissions, RF susceptibility, and/or lightning.
  • A strong foundation in RF/microwave engineering and wireless communication systems.
  • Experience designing RF circuits, including power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, filters, and antennas.
  • Knowledge of wireless communication protocols such as 5G, WiFi, and Bluetooth.
  • Proficiency with RF and microwave simulation tools such as ADS, HFSS, AWR, MCST, or similar.
  • Strong familiarity with PCB layout, high-frequency design techniques, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) mitigation.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with design and simulation tools such as MATLAB, SPICE, or similar.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and firmware development.
  • Experience in sustainment engineering, including failure analysis and obsolescence management.
  • Familiarity with 3D antenna design and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Review and maintain awareness of obsolete parts on assigned products and provide appropriate resolutions.
  • Design and analyze analog and RF circuits using schematic capture and performance simulation tools.
  • Characterize analog and RF signals using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Design and analyze digital circuits and computer hardware components, including processors, memory, and interfaces, and assess performance characteristics such as throughput, processing architecture, timing, and capacity.
  • Provide supervision and technical guidance for PCB layout.
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment.
  • Perform validation and verification activities to ensure products meet design specifications.
  • Contribute to engineering estimates for electrical design problems of limited to moderate scope.
  • Review LRU defect trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements, and recommend approaches, tools, and techniques to improve development processes.
  • Prepare technical documentation and collaborate using written and verbal communication.
