Sr. Electrical Engineer, Hardware Design

Blue Origin•Southgate, WA

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE) Formulation team, a multidisciplinary group supporting projects, studies, and programs in a rapid formulation design environment. The team works across power systems, simulation and environments, thermal and fluids management, guidance, navigation and control, autonomy, command and control, data handling and instrumentation, electrical integration and avionics, and propulsion. The role calls for an individual contributor who can work effectively amid ambiguity, act quickly, and help develop solutions that support long-term program success. As a Hardware Design Engineer for spacecraft programs, you will contribute to the lifecycle of vehicle electronic systems by designing, developing, and testing avionics hardware from component through integrated-system levels. The position combines systems-level thinking with hands-on prototyping, fabrication, harness building, and hardware testing. You will collaborate with mechanical, thermal, software, and systems engineers to define vehicle architecture and integrate avionics into the overall system. The work includes vehicle power system design and analysis; radiation-aware design and component selection; sensor requirements and interface definition; schematics, PCB layout, and circuit simulation; hardware verification and validation; troubleshooting and support for vehicle testing and launch campaigns; and management of electrical power budgets. The posted base pay range for Washington applicants is $156,802.00–$219,522.45; ranges at other sites may differ.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience in avionics and power hardware development for aerospace, defense, automotive, or other high-reliability applications.
  • Demonstrated hands-on engineering experience designing, building, and reworking wire harnesses and prototype electronics.
  • Understanding of common circuit analyses, including Worst Case Circuit Analysis, derating, power analysis, and timing.
  • Strong understanding of designing for the space radiation environment and its effects on electronic components.
  • Experience with a variety of sensor types and associated analog and digital interfaces.

  • Fabricate, assemble, and test engineering-level hardware, including building and modifying wire harnesses, soldering components, and integrating sensor systems for rapid prototyping and troubleshooting.
  • Apply radiation-hardening principles, including consideration of total ionizing dose (TID) and single-event effects (SEE), and analyze and select components to meet mission radiation requirements.
  • Define and manage requirements for sensors and their electrical interfaces, including analog, SPI, I2C, UART, RS-422, CAN, and Ethernet interfaces.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and thermal engineering teams on vehicle layout, packaging, connector selection, and system design to meet avionics requirements.
  • Develop schematics, manage PCB layout, and perform SPICE simulations for critical circuits.
  • Create test plans, procedures, and reports for hardware verification and validation at board, box, and system levels.
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware issues across integrated systems and support vehicle-level testing and launch campaigns.
  • Generate and maintain electrical power budgets covering power consumption and generation/storage margins by mission phase.
