Electrical Engineer 1 (Entry-Level) - Nuclear (January 2027)

Sargent & Lundy•Farmington Hills, MI

About The Position

The Electrical Engineer 1 will join Sargent & Lundy’s Nuclear Power Group, supporting projects to design and modernize electrical systems and large power components for existing nuclear plants, restart projects, small modular reactors, and advanced reactor facilities. The work also supports plant life-extension and digital upgrade initiatives. The target start date is early 2027. Under the direction of senior engineers, the role assists with engineering calculations and design tasks for nuclear power stations, including protection and coordination studies, cable sizing, medium- and low-voltage system design, DC battery sizing, and analyses supporting safety-related electrical systems. The engineer will use industry-standard tools such as ETAP to analyze and model complex electrical networks and assist with selecting and integrating major electrical equipment. The position offers daily technical supervision, hands-on learning, training, and collaboration with engineers, subject matter experts, designers, drafters, and multidisciplinary project teams. Work may include reviewing station-specific technical information, interfacing with client stakeholders, supporting project schedules and budgets, and contributing to drawings and project deliverables. The role also includes opportunities for onsite nuclear station walkdowns, witnessing installation and testing, supporting refueling outages, and participating in projects the engineer helped design. Employees may qualify to prepare and sign off on certain engineering deliverables under supervision, while receiving mentorship and exposure to the professional licensure pathway.
