About The Position

FormFactor is seeking an Electrical Design Automation Intern to develop AI-assisted design automation workflows for Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) engineering. The internship applies Large Language Models (LLMs) and Python development to automate Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, including Ansys HFSS and Keysight ADS. The work aims to turn engineering specifications into structured, reusable Python libraries that can generate simulation setups, run analyses, and produce engineering results. The intern will work at the intersection of electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, software development, and design automation. They will collaborate with SI and PI engineers, build and demonstrate end-to-end automation prototypes, and document the resulting architecture and use cases. The expected deliverables include a framework that converts specifications into Python objects, an LLM-assisted specification-parsing demonstration, automated HFSS and/or ADS project generation, SI/PI workflow examples, and recommendations for future AI-enabled engineering workflows. The role is based in Livermore, California, and has regular day-shift hours. The stated pay range is $30.95–$40.64 per hour, depending on experience, skills, and background; pay may vary in other locations. FormFactor offers medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, a 401(k) with company match, an employee stock purchase plan, paid time off, quarterly profit-sharing bonuses, and flexible spending or savings accounts.

  • Strong programming experience in Python.
  • Basic understanding of software engineering practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • The posting lists a minimum of 4–6 years of related experience as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or experience in Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, electromagnetics, high-speed digital design, or RF engineering.
  • Experience with one or more EDA tools, such as Ansys HFSS, Keysight ADS, or Cadence or Synopsys design tools.
  • Experience with data science and machine learning frameworks.
  • Familiarity with or interest in object-oriented programming, Git version control, LLMs, prompt engineering, and agentic AI workflows.
  • Experience building engineering automation tools.
  • Exposure to Python, Ansys HFSS API, Keysight ADS Python Interface, Git, Azure OpenAI, Pandas, NumPy, Jupyter, vector databases/RAG, or engineering data management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Python frameworks for automating SI/PI simulation workflows.
  • Create structured data models for electrical design requirements, constraints, and specifications.
  • Investigate and implement LLM-based methods for translating natural-language engineering requirements into machine-readable design objects.
  • Connect Python automation with EDA tools, including Ansys HFSS and Keysight ADS, and with data analysis and post-processing tools.
  • Build reusable libraries for simulation setup generation, parameterized model creation, design-rule validation, and results extraction and reporting.
  • Develop proof-of-concept workflows that automate the process from specification through simulation execution.
  • Collaborate with Signal Integrity and Power Integrity engineers to understand workflows and identify automation opportunities.
  • Document software architecture, APIs, and engineering use cases.
  • Deliver a prototype framework that converts engineering specifications into structured Python objects, demonstrate LLM-assisted specification parsing, automate HFSS and/or ADS project generation, provide SI/PI workflow examples, and document recommendations for future AI-enabled engineering workflows.
