This role involves shadowing an electrician, learning to read blueprints, diagnose and repair electrical problems, and assist with installing new electrical systems. The apprentice will support journeymen in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of various electrical components and systems in accordance with applicable standards and codes.

Requirements

  • 4001-6000 hours (2-3 years’) experience working as an electrician
  • Basic knowledge of the electrical craft
  • Developing knowledge in the installation or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment, and fixtures
  • Familiarity with testing electrical systems with appropriate tools
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately
  • Ability to listen to co-workers’ suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations giving full attention to what they are saying and take the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate
  • Ability to coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job
  • Ability to produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards
  • Ability to learn to read and understand plans and specifications
  • Ability to visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions
  • Ability to assist in the storage, planning and lay-out of materials in accordance with those plans and specifications
  • Ability to assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently
  • Ability to learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement
  • Ability to notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed

Responsibilities

  • Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions.
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools for tasks such as measuring, cutting, bending wire and conduit, drilling holes, pulling wiring, and assisting in lifting and fastening components.
  • Perform minor electrical repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, keep supplies and parts organized, and disassemble, repair, and reassemble defective electrical equipment.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish electricians with necessary materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work areas and restock supplies and materials.
  • Assist in the installation of related items according to plans and specifications.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, engaging with the work team to achieve zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to supervision or safety professionals, utilizing stop work authority if necessary.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervision and participate in the investigation process.
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions, identifying and correcting safety hazards.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide whole numbers and fractions).
  • Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, understanding their points and providing feedback.
