2027 Internship - Electrical and Computer Engineering Intern

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks an Electrical and Computer Engineering Intern to contribute to the design, analysis, testing, and deployment of electrical and electromechanical systems. The intern will work alongside experienced engineers on projects supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, developing and applying expertise in electrical engineering and embedded systems. The role involves designing embedded hardware and software, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on requirements and circuit design, selecting components, validating designs through modeling and simulation, presenting work at design reviews, and preparing documentation for communication, fabrication, and operation. The intern will also test, integrate, and deploy systems, procure hardware for assembly and testing, and help develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience designing, testing, and developing electrical hardware and software systems through coursework, graduate research, personal projects, or previous work experience.
  • Experience designing and prototyping electronic circuitry using FPGAs, DSP processors, microcontrollers, sensors, and power supplies.
  • Programming experience in one or more languages such as C, C++, or Python, or hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog.
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools such as SPICE or MATLAB/SIMULINK.
  • Experience testing and measuring electrical systems using equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and function generators.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to document designs and results.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance before reporting and ultimately a full Secret security clearance; eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
