2027 Internship - Mechanical Engineering Intern

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will help develop mechanical and electromechanical systems for projects across APL mission areas. The intern will work with teams of engineers and scientists who design, analyze, and test systems, contributing to robust mechanical solutions in a collaborative environment that values leadership and communication. The work may involve computer-aided design, analysis, assembly, and test and evaluation of mechanical, mechatronic, robotic, or electromechanical systems. The intern will collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists; create files and documentation for fabrication; and, depending on the project, 3D-print models or initiate fabrication. The role also includes coordinating with manufacturing teams, ordering assembly hardware, assembling and testing designs, and presenting results to team members.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Passion for CAD and practical experience using CAD software, potentially through class projects, graduate research, or a prior internship.
  • Ability to obtain an interim Secret security clearance before reporting and ultimately acquire a full Secret clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship, as required for eligibility for access to classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing dual degrees or having equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • CAD experience with SolidWorks or Creo Parametric.
  • Experience or interest in performing finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Previous experience with dynamic systems controls and mechanism design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform computer-aided design, analysis, assembly, and test and evaluation of mechanical, mechatronic, robotic, or electromechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists.
  • Generate files and documentation needed to facilitate fabrication of designs.
  • 3D-print models or initiate fabrication of designs, depending on the project.
  • Communicate with manufacturing teams responsible for fabricating parts from models and drawings.
  • Order hardware needed to assemble designs, then assemble and test the designs.
  • Give presentations to communicate results to team members.
