This role is for an Electric Transmission Asset Planning & Operations Engineering Senior II, a position that may be filled at a higher level based on experience. The primary purpose of this role is to lead complex studies and planning initiatives to optimize transmission system capacity and resilience. The position involves applying specialized knowledge to influence project design and operational strategies, ensuring alignment with corporate reliability goals, and shaping transmission planning methodologies and operational frameworks to address evolving system needs. The role provides authoritative technical guidance to inform strategic investment decisions and support organizational growth objectives. Specifically, this role will focus on developing detailed transmission design packages, PLS-CADD modeling, performing advanced technical evaluations, and developing solutions to improve transmission system reliability and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Requires a 4 year degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Typically requires 8 years of related experience.
  • Power System Engineering - A subfield of electrical engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electric power, and the electrical apparatus connected to such systems.
  • Engineering Design Power System Protection and Relaying - A series of steps that engineers follow to find a solution to a problem.
  • Power System Protection and Relaying - Implementing systems and devices to protect power systems from faults and disturbances, ensuring reliable operation.
  • Load Flow and Short Circuit Analysis - Analyzing the flow of electrical power and the effects of short circuits to ensure the stability and reliability of power systems.
  • Interconnection Studies - Analyzing the technical and/or economic impacts of achieving a higher share of variable renewable energy in the electricity mix.
  • Energy Operations Management - Overseeing the proactive, organized and systematic management of energy use in a building or organization.
  • Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management - The systematic approach to maintain health and safety at occupation and protect the environment.
  • Regulatory Compliance - Ensuring an organization's adherence to laws, regulations, guidelines and specifications relevant to its business processes.
  • Engineering Blueprint/Schematics Interpretation - Reading Engineering drawings and understanding the ideas and information that they are intended to communicate.
  • Instrumentation and Equipment Calibration - Adjustment and measuring instruments and equipment to ensure accurate and reliable measurements, verifying the accuracy and precision of instruments, adjusting them to meet required standards, and documenting calibration procedures and results.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of California is required.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the Base Case Development Process by reviewing and developing electrical simulation models for transmission lines and substations.
  • Conducts power flow and transient stability analyses to ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC).
  • Prepares technical studies and justifications for capacity and reliability projects within the electric transmission system.
  • Performs generator interconnection studies and develops comprehensive reports for new generation projects.
  • Utilizes advanced power system analysis tools to simulate, model, and analyze transmission system performance.
  • Identifies and recommends enhancements to analytical tools and methodologies to optimize transmission planning and scenario analysis.
  • Anticipates strategic project sites and routes by replicating Independent System Operator (ISO) studies and analyzing system needs to propose effective transmission solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
