About The Position

This internship focuses on Electric Distribution Standards, which encompasses all materials from the Substation to the meter on the building, including Overhead Distribution, Underground Distribution, Underground Network, Outdoor Lighting, and Communication Standards. The standard manuals developed in this role are used by design and construction teams to build the electrical distribution system. This position covers all 8 states Xcel Energy operates in, with a physical location in St. Paul, MN and Denver, CO.

Requirements

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy

Responsibilities

  • Research and write white papers on equipment with detailed technical information such as: number of operations, insulating material, compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEEE, ASTM, ANSI), physical size for future distribution system (FAN/Grid Modernization)
  • Analyze current equipment for manufacture equivalent material as compared to incumbent materials. Multiple sources for functionally equivalent material
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with Design and Construction Manual development
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with faulty material analysis and solution research
