About The Position

Work with the Engineering staff to support the Electric Area Engineering team. Work as an entry level engineer doing tasks that support electric reliability, power quality, system protection and plant betterment to improve the electric distribution system. Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills. This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs. Requirements

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering, with a preference for Electrical Engineering majors.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Nice To Haves

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Strong interest in electric power systems and utility operations.
  • Understanding of basic electrical engineering concepts, including three-phase power systems and circuit analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI and digital productivity tools to enhance data analysis, technical documentation, and problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with distribution system analysis and feeder performance evaluations
  • Review outage data and reliability metrics (e.g., SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIDI) to identify trends
  • Prepare and support Project Planning & Execution submittals
  • Apply and verify compliance with electric standards, construction practices, and engineering guidelines
  • Analyze power quality measurements, including voltage, current, flicker, and harmonics
  • Assist Area Engineers with capital project tracking and documentation
  • Work closely with Area Engineers, project managers, planners, designers, and operations personnel
  • Communicate & prepare technical summaries, reports, and presentations for engineering staff
