About The Position

The successful Electric Distribution Dispatch Intern will work alongside Electric Distribution Operators to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electric distribution system. This role will provide hands-on experience with real-world utility operations, exposure to outage management processes, and an understanding of the technologies that keep the grid functioning. The intern will assist operators with daily monitoring, analysis, and coordination tasks, while learning how field activities, system data, and customer service integrate in a modern control center environment. This position is ideal for a 2nd-year Electronics Engineering Technology, applied sciences, or mechatronics students interested in power systems, utility operations, and control center technologies.

Requirements

  • Basic AC/DC electrical theory and circuit fundamentals.
  • Electrical distribution system components (transformers, breakers, switches, conductors).
  • Safe work practices in an electrical utility environment.
  • Interpreting technical diagrams and single-line drawings.
  • Organizing and presenting data clearly and accurately.
  • Using software systems to retrieve and analyze operational information.
  • Clear verbal and written communication.
  • Follow detailed instructions with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented control center environment.
  • Handle sensitive customer data with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Learn new software applications and procedures quickly.
  • Remain attentive and detail-oriented during extended monitoring periods.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an Associate's degree program in applied sciences, electronics engineering technology, mechatronics, or related
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be graduating from their associate's program in 2028

Responsibilities

  • Monitor distribution system data using the Outage Management System (OMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and related platforms under operator guidance.
  • Assist with logging system events, equipment status changes, and operational activities.
  • Support operators in identifying and prioritizing outage restoration activities.
  • Assist in updating the real-time status of devices within the Outage Management System (OMS).
  • Observe and assist in analyzing fault data, load trends, and equipment alarms.
  • Perform basic data entry, filing, and record-keeping tasks to support operational workflows.
  • Shadow operators during real-time coordination with field crews and other departments.
