About The Position

Electric Distribution Standards covers all of the material from the Substation to the meter on the building. This includes Overhead Distribution, Underground Distribution, Underground Network, Outdoor Lighting, and Communication Standards. The standard manuals are what design and construction use to build the electrical distribution system. This role covers all 8 states that Xcel Energy covers with the physical location in St. Paul, MN and Denver, CO. This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Requirements

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy

Responsibilities

  • Research and write white papers on equipment with detailed technical information such as: number of operations, insulating material, compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEEE, ASTM, ANSI), physical size for future distribution system (FAN/Grid Modernization)
  • Analyze current equipment for manufacture equivalent material as compared to incumbent materials.
  • Multiple sources for functionally equivalent material
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with Design and Construction Manual development
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with faulty material analysis and solution research
