About The Position

The City of Orrville is seeking applicants for two positions: Electric Distribution Line Supervisor and Lineworker. The Electric Distribution Line Supervisor will plan and schedule construction, maintenance, and repair of system lines, including material and equipment estimates and entering into the computerized maintenance management system. This role involves supervising assigned personnel, assigning tasks and vehicles, providing guidance, monitoring work performance, and inspecting completed work. Responsibilities include monitoring the installation of metering, performing installation work if required, responding to emergencies, organizing mutual aid with other utilities, preparing sketches and maps using CAD, consulting with management on projects and problems, assisting with budget preparation, supervising contractor work, training lineworkers in safe practices, and resolving public complaints. The Lineworker serves as a ground person, preparing materials, observing work activities around energized circuits, operating equipment, working on low voltage circuits, stocking line trucks, trimming trees, and attending training for advancement. Both positions are Civil Service roles filled by application and written exam.

Requirements

  • Graduation from college or university with an associate degree in electrical engineering, electronics or related field, or completion of an apprentice program in electronics, supplemented by formal training courses covering electricity, oil circuit breakers, transformers, and related equipment (for Supervisor).
  • Considerable experience in electric line maintenance work at a senior level (for Supervisor).
  • Possession of a high school diploma (or GED) (for Lineworker).
  • Specialized training and/or experience in line work that includes verifiable training and experience in climbing (for Lineworker).
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) or eligibility to obtain a CDL (for Lineworker).
  • Completion and submission of the Qualifications for Testing form.

  • Submit a copy of DD-214 if eligible for military credit.
  • Provide own tools and climbing equipment for practical exam (for Lineworker).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule construction, maintenance, and repair of system lines.

  • Monitor the installation of single- and three-phase metering.

  • Assist with the preparation of the annual budget by providing recommendations concerning equipment, staffing and material needs.
  • Supervise and inspect work of contractors.
  • Train lineworkers in safe work practices and proper operation of tools and equipment.
  • Receive and resolve complaints from the public.
  • Visit construction sites to advise and consult regarding options for utilizing and implementing electric services.
  • Serve as a ground person for lineworker duties.
  • Prepare material for higher level lineworkers.
  • Observe work activities around energized circuits for hazards.
  • Operate assigned equipment.
  • Work on dead or low voltage circuits.
  • Stock line trucks with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Trim trees.
  • Attend training sessions to prepare for advancement.
