About The Position

The Elder in Residence (Elder) is an important element of the overall counseling program of the Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center. The Elder will meet weekly with students, both individually and in small groups, to determine specific student needs and how those needs might be met. In addition, the Elder will meet with representatives of the nine local Tribal Nations to ensure that the Center programming is responsive to student needs. The Elder also assists Center staff with coordination of events, facilitate Talking Circle and Cultural Workshops.

Requirements

Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.
Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
Ability to gather and analyze data.
Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
Ability to provide effective student services such as advising, tutoring, counseling, or other related duties in a college setting.
Ability to interact professionally and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, and administrators.
Effective communication skills in-person, on the phone, and via online systems.
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism while providing direct service to students, even in difficult situations.
Demonstrated thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Knowledge or familiarity in working with, coaching, or mentoring American Indian Students.
Knowledge of Native American Cultural Traditions, Native American Communities, and Programs.
Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Nice To Haves

At least five years of community experience working with the Native American communities and programs, such as Native Wellness, White Bison Society, and Native Dads Network.
