About The Position

The EEG Tech I performs electroencephalographic recordings for adult and pediatric patients under direct or indirect supervision, consistent with demonstrated competency. The role requires foundational knowledge of electronics, anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, clinical neurophysiology, and neurodiagnostic procedures and protocols. As technical proficiency develops, the technologist may perform increasingly complex neurodiagnostic procedures. The position collaborates with electroencephalographers, physicians, advanced-practice providers, nurses, and senior technologists to coordinate studies and provide technical assistance during complex procedures in an academic medical center environment. The technologist performs routine and complex EEG studies, long-term video EEG monitoring, neurotelemetry, and related patient safety monitoring across laboratory, inpatient, outpatient, neonatal, intensive care, and operating room settings. Duties include patient identification and history review, electrode application, impedance checks, physiologic testing, annotations, technical documentation, and preliminary technical review. The role also includes equipment and laboratory upkeep, supply monitoring, assigned administrative documentation, participation in training and quality activities, and travel among designated hospital and clinic locations. While preparing for EEG registration, the technologist works under the required level of supervision and follows additional quality assurance controls. With demonstrated competency, work may be performed under indirect supervision across a variety of shifts. The role participates in an on-call rotation and may support approved research activities when assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Education and training sufficient to meet eligibility requirements for EEG registration; qualifying training may be completed through an approved on-the-job training pathway.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision required within the scope of the job.
  • EEG-R (Electroencephalographic Technician Registration) required within 8 years.

Nice To Haves

  • Education and training sufficient to meet EEG registration eligibility is preferred.
  • Knowledge of patient-centered care, medical terminology, basic electronics, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, infection prevention, electrical safety, and EEG instrumentation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex EEG studies, long-term video EEG monitoring, neurotelemetry, and associated patient safety monitoring in the Neurophysiology Laboratory and in inpatient, outpatient, neonatal, intensive care, and operating room settings.
  • Complete patient identification, history review, electrode application, impedance checks, physiologic testing, annotations, technical documentation, and preliminary technical review according to laboratory protocols.
  • Work under the required direct and/or indirect supervision while preparing for ABRET registration and comply with additional quality assurance controls.
  • Work under indirect supervision as demonstrated competency permits, across days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Participate in the neurodiagnostic laboratory on-call rotation and respond within established departmental time frames.
  • Maintain required Human Subject Protection Program training and, when assigned, support collection and documentation of patient information for approved research activities under institutional protocols.
  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe neurodiagnostic laboratory environment.
  • Perform equipment inspections, function checks, calibration, cleaning, and preventive maintenance within the scope of the role, and report equipment concerns through established channels.
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies for the assigned area according to departmental procedures.
  • Apply clinical neurophysiology principles and, as competency increases, adapt procedures using greater technical skill, clinical judgment, and knowledge based on patient condition and the clinical question.
  • Complete or support appointment scheduling, patient history, encounter, charge-capture, and billing documentation as assigned, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Participate in didactic and practical instruction to develop clinical skills and learn laboratory policies, operating procedures, and protocols.
  • Participate in weekly and annual conferences, quality activities, and technical meetings, and present educational topics as appropriate.
  • Travel among designated inpatient locations, including Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital, and outpatient locations, including Westfall Neurology Clinic and East River Pediatric Neurology, to perform EEG and evoked potential recordings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
