About The Position

This position is for the Last Mile Coding Program at MCI Shirley. The Educational Specialist will supervise the daily operation of the classroom, facilitate technology problem resolution, and maintain a positive learning environment. The role involves utilizing best practices in instructional methods to support students in a distance learning program, completing attendance, updating case plans, processing boosts, and managing performance ratings. The specialist will also be responsible for completing required training, maintaining records of professional development, and ensuring accurate payroll processing. A strong understanding of current educational practices and DOC policies and procedures is essential, as is the ability to collaborate with other professionals and interact appropriately with incarcerated individuals and staff. The role also includes managing the classroom according to institutional rules, maintaining an inventory of technological tools and equipment, and ensuring a safe and clean working area.

Requirements

• Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in teaching, educational administration, educational counseling or educational guidance, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
• A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in education or special education, educational administration or educational counseling may be substituted for the required experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
• Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the equivalent from another state may be required.

• Should have at least three years working in an educational or adult educational setting.
• Knowledge of institution schedules and procedures a plus.
• Ability to work with an incarcerated adult population in a high/medium security setting.
• Knowledge of principles and practices in an adult correctional institution.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of daily security procedures.
• A current Massachusetts Teacher Certification is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the daily operation of the The Last Mile Coding program classroom.
• Helps facilitate technology problem resolution through interfacing with The Last Mile Coding technical support and the students in the program.
• Keeps a positive learning environment in the classroom for all program participants.
• Utilize best practices, current instructional methods, to help support students involved in this distance learning program.
• Complete student attendance daily.
• Update incarcerated individual case plan as required by SOP.
• Complete EGT Performance ratings in IMS no later than the last day of the awarding month.
• Complete required documentation to process boosts as determined by SOP.
• Complete required 40 hours of training within the fiscal year.
• Maintain a record of professional development and DOC trainings attended.
• Update SSTA promptly to ensure that payroll is processed accurately.
• Illustrate an understanding of current educational practices.
• Illustrate a comprehensive and current knowledge of DOC policies and procedures.
• Engage in Division priorities to enhance the progression of strategic goals.
• Collaborate with other professionals, both inside and outside of the Education Division to contribute to division goals.
• Interact with staff in a professional manner, utilizing appropriate boundaries.
• Interact and communicate with incarcerated individuals in a professional manner while utilizing appropriate boundaries.
• Report all security related concerns to your supervisor promptly.
• Manage assigned classroom in a manner consistent with institutional rules and regulations.
• Maintain a current and up-to-date inventory of all technological tools and equipment.
• Maintain a safe and secure and clean working area.
• Complete duties as assigned that support the Division’s mission.
