About The Position

This position involves supervising the daily operations of The Last Mile Coding program classroom. The Educational Specialist will facilitate technology problem resolution by interfacing with technical support and students, maintain a positive learning environment, and utilize best practices in instructional methods for this distance learning program. Responsibilities include completing student attendance, updating case plans, processing performance ratings and boosts, and completing required training. The role also involves maintaining an inventory of technological tools and equipment, ensuring a safe and clean working area, and supporting the Division's mission through assigned duties.

Requirements

• Two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in teaching, educational administration, educational counseling or educational guidance, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the equivalent from another state may be required.
• No felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
• Must not have engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997.
• Must not have been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph.
• The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with incarcerated individuals or residents.

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods in education.
• Must possess attitude, temperament and ability to work in a correctional setting.
• At least three years working in an educational or adult educational setting.
• Knowledge of institution schedules and procedures a plus.
• Ability to work with an incarcerated adult population in a high/medium security setting.
• Knowledge of principles and practices in an adult correctional institution.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of daily security procedures.
• A current Massachusetts Teacher Certification is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the daily operation of the The Last Mile Coding program classroom.
• Helps facilitate technology problem resolution through interfacing with The Last Mile Coding technical support and the students in the program.
• Keeps a positive learning environment in the classroom for all program participants.
• Utilize best practices, current instructional methods, to help support students involved in this distance learning program.
• Complete student attendance daily.
• Update incarcerated individual case plan as required by SOP.
• Complete EGT Performance ratings in IMS no later than the last day of the awarding month.
• Complete required documentation to process boosts as determined by SOP.
• Complete required 40 hours of training within the fiscal year. Maintain a record of professional development and DOC trainings attended.
• Update SSTA promptly to ensure that payroll is processed accurately.
• Illustrate an understanding of current educational practices.
• Illustrate a comprehensive and current knowledge of DOC policies and procedures.
• Engage in Division priorities to enhance the progression of strategic goals.
• Collaborate with other professionals, both inside and outside of the Education Division to contribute to division goals.
• Interact with staff in a professional manner, utilizing appropriate boundaries.
• Interact and communicate with incarcerated individuals in a professional manner while utilizing appropriate boundaries.
• Report all security related concerns to your supervisor promptly.
• Manage assigned classroom in a manner consistent with institutional rules and regulations.
• Maintain a current and up-to-date inventory of all technological tools and equipment.
• Maintain a safe and secure and clean working area.
• Complete duties as assigned that support the Division’s mission.
