About The Position

The Education Assistant works in the STARS special education center-based program at Neill Elementary School. This federal setting III program serves students with social, emotional, and/or behavioral needs requiring supports not available in less restrictive settings. Students are typically supported in a smaller, structured, predictable environment with a high staff-to-student ratio and integrated support from school social workers and psychologists. Students may access typical school settings, including general education classrooms, the cafeteria, and hallways, with participation increasing as their skills develop. The position is seven hours per day, consisting of 6.5 paid work hours and a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The stated rate is $24.75 per hour based on the current contract, plus benefits.

Requirements

At least two years of college credits (usually 60 credits in Minnesota), an associate's or higher degree, or a passing score on the ParaPro or Paraeducator Assessment.
Familiarity with word processing, filing, and computers.
A patient, calm, and understanding manner when working with students.
Sensitivity to confidentiality.
Ability to attend work regularly and report to work in a timely manner.
Ability to assist students with classroom assignments.
Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
Willingness to lift, carry, and physically manage students as necessary.

Experience working with students who have cognitive disabilities, physical disabilities, and behavior problems.

Responsibilities

Assist with supervision and instruction of students with disabilities.
Provide clerical and organizational support to special education teachers as needed.
Work with individuals and/or small groups on activities and assignments presented by mainstream or special education teachers.
Provide support for students in crisis.
Lift, carry, and physically manage students as necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.
