About The Position

The Lead, Editorial & Media Communications serves as Mercy Care’s primary steward of organizational voice and storytelling. This role provides leadership for written communications across internal, external, earned, and shared channels, ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment with Mercy Care’s mission and strategic priorities. The position plays a central role in internal communications, media relations, marketing content, development storytelling, social media content planning, and organizational thought leadership. This is a senior individual‑contributor role with significant responsibility for reputational risk, message discipline, and narrative strategy. The role works closely with the Manager of Communications and partners across HR, Development, Operations, and clinical teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Graphic Design, or related field
  • 7–10 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated strength in AP‑style writing and editing.
  • Proven experience in media relations, pitching, and crisis or high‑stakes messaging.
  • Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working across teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Healthcare, nonprofit, or mission‑driven experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own and manage Mercy Care’s internal communications, including Take 5, ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging content.
  • Partner with Human Resources and leadership on people updates, culture initiatives, change communications, and organizational messaging.
  • Develop internal storytelling that strengthens alignment, morale, and connection to mission.
  • Lead media relations strategy and execution, including proactive pitching and reactive response.
  • Develop press materials, media kits, and talking points.
  • Support crisis and rapid‑response communications as needed.
  • Position Mercy Care as a trusted voice in areas such as pediatrics, housing as healthcare, behavioral health, street outreach, and mobile care.
  • Write and edit marketing copy for service‑line materials, clinic communications, outreach campaigns, and events.
  • Develop donor stories, appeal copy (including Giving Tuesday and end‑of‑year campaigns), stewardship messaging, and case statements in support of Development goals.
  • Create and manage the monthly social media content plan.
  • Write captions, hashtags, and short scripts for social posts and short‑form video content.
  • Collaborate with creative and operational staff on execution and publishing.
  • Draft op‑eds, executive speeches, and thought leadership content to strengthen Mercy Care’s advocacy voice.
  • Partner with the Director of Communications on tone, positioning, and priority narratives for key audiences and patient populations.
  • Serve as editorial gatekeeper for organizational voice, tone, and message discipline.
  • Provide guidance and editing support to ensure written communications align with brand and strategy.
