About The Position

The Editorial and Communications Assistant supports the lab’s public engagement, outreach, and funding activities through writing, editing, and digital communications. Responsibilities include assisting with the preparation of lay-media pieces that communicate the lab’s research to general audiences; maintaining and updating the lab’s public-facing website and news content; developing and managing the lab’s social media presence to increase public visibility and engagement; and providing writing and editorial support for grant proposals, related funding materials, and other written materials.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated professional writing and editing experience, including the ability to produce clear, polished prose for a variety of audiences and formats.
  • Experience writing or editing for non-specialist or lay audiences, such as science communication, journalism, marketing copy, or public-facing editorial work.
  • Experience managing or contributing to organizational websites and social media accounts in a professional capacity.
  • Strong command of grammar, style, and editing conventions; ability to proofread and copyedit documents to a professional standard.
  • Ability to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and communicate proactively about progress.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers and scientists, and to translate technical expertise into accessible content for general audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining records, documentation, and editorial files.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive or prepublication research information.
  • Computer skills to use standard office and publishing software, including word processing, presentation tools, and electronic communication platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and edit lay-audience pieces related to lab research, including blog posts, press releases, op-eds, and science communication articles.
  • Collaborate with lab members to translate technical content into accessible writing for general audiences.
  • Assist with coordinating media inquiries and maintaining relationships with relevant outlets or science communication venues, as directed.
  • Maintain and update the lab’s public-facing website, including posting news items, announcements, and new content as directed.
  • Ensure that information about lab personnel, projects, and publications is accurate and current.
  • Develop, manage, and grow the lab’s presence on social media platforms (e.g., X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky).
  • Create and maintain a content calendar aligned with lab milestones, publications, and events.
  • Draft, edit, and schedule posts that communicate research findings and lab activities to diverse audiences.
  • Provide editorial and writing support for grant proposals and related funding materials, including drafting and revising narrative sections, proofreading for clarity and style, and ensuring consistency across proposal documents.
  • Maintain a library of reusable language, boilerplate sections, and style guidelines.
  • Assist with tracking grant deadlines and organizing submission materials as needed.
