About The Position

The temporary, part-time editorial associate of readers supports the publication and distribution of the journal by handling communication with Ploughshares' team of volunteer readers, managing submissions, assisting in contracting, and assisting in running our annual Emerging Writers’ Contest. This position is primarily a hybrid role with 2 expected days in the office each week. Scheduled Weekly Hours: 15-20 hours.

Requirements

Previous internship or work experience in customer service, general admin, data management, website management, and/or publishing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience or interest in the publishing industry as it pertains to magazines, journals, small presses and/or publishing houses.
A passion for contemporary literature.
Continuous oral and written communication with co-workers and supervisors is essential.
Repetitive movements, occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds, reaching, lifting, stooping and the ability to read a computer screen, detect color-coding and read fine print will be expected.

Responsibilities

Recruitment, onboarding, and management of ~80 volunteer readers.
Assigning batches of submissions to volunteer readers.
Working with the managing editor to update and maintain the volunteer reader database, manual, and tracker of batch counts as readers pass on or reject work.
Working with the managing editor to communicate with staff genre editors and guest editors as they curate their issue; formatting and sending a shortlist of work to the guest editor.
