About The Position

The Editor is the key staff editor in handling day-to-day reporting, editing and story selection, copy editing, proofing, design and pagination of the newspaper, including special or niche publications as required. The Editor assists in choosing content and determining story and graphics placements for the news and features sections, and oversees their overall design. The Editor must demonstrate extraordinary news judgment in choosing stories and advising in the placement of local stories.

Requirements

• Bachelor or other 4-year degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent.
• Strong planning orientation.
• Professional proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English.
• Valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
• Basic literacy in computer software, including word processing and Internet browsing/research.
• Thorough familiarity with AP Style and local modifications.
• Familiarity with InDesign and Blox.
• Knowledge of current design trends and advancements.
• Familiarity with the community, its history, its issues and leading personalities.

• Previous experience as an editor.

Responsibilities

• Handling day-to-day reporting, editing and story selection.
• Copy editing, proofing, design and pagination of the newspaper, including special or niche publications.
• Assisting in choosing content and determining story and graphics placements for the news and features sections.
• Overseeing the overall design of the newspaper.
• Demonstrating extraordinary news judgment in choosing stories and advising in the placement of local stories.
• Copy editing stories and proofing pages for accuracy, fairness, completeness, grammar, style, syntax, organization and clarity on deadline.
• Writing clear and effective headlines, decks, subheads, call-out quotations and cutlines.
• Designing for clarity and maximum visual impact on deadline.
• Coaching reporters developing their editing, news judgment and design skills.
• Meeting and enforcing multiple deadlines.
• Making quick, confident, informed decisions, acting promptly and following through effectively.
• Managing time effectively.
