About The Position

Kleinfelder's Environmental team is looking for an experienced Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to join their growing Mount Dora, FL office. The successful candidate will assist with ecological field assessments for projects in the mining, energy, and commercial development industries. This role involves protected species surveys, gopher tortoise relocations, vegetative monitoring, hydrologic monitoring, water quality sampling, and support with other ecological assessments, as well as reporting. The position is anticipated to be 80% field work and 20% office work, with up to 30% travel (local/overnight). The role requires flexibility in work schedule, willingness to work long hours in adverse conditions and remote areas, and the ability to work effectively in both team environments and with limited supervision.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in the natural resources (i.e. biological, zoology, botany, ecology or environmental science).
  • Minimum of 3 years of applicable job experience.
  • Knowledge of the natural resources of Florida.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Relevant computer/software experience.
  • Solid technical writing skills.
  • Solid verbal communication skills.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Gopher Tortoise Authorized Agent (AA) for surveying and mechanical excavation.
  • Ability to travel.
  • A clear driving record.
  • Experience conducting threatened and endangered species surveys per FWC and United States Fish and Wildlife Service survey protocols/guidelines.
  • Ability to lead gopher tortoise relocation efforts including mechanical excavation and bucket trapping.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a natural resources professional.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in use of Avenza, ESRI Field maps, a sub-meter GPS and data processing.
  • Experience operating a 4x4 truck.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ecological field assessments for projects in the mining, energy, and commercial development industries.
  • Conduct protected species surveys.
  • Perform gopher tortoise relocations.
  • Conduct vegetative monitoring.
  • Perform hydrologic monitoring.
  • Conduct water quality sampling.
  • Provide support with other ecological assessments.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Coordinate with team members and project managers.
  • Periodically interact with clients and regulatory agency staff.
  • Obtain an MSHA New Miner Training certificate.
  • Travel within Florida and nationwide.
  • Work outside of typical business hours.
  • Work long hours in adverse environmental conditions and in remote areas.
